Never heard of OkayAfrica magazine? Well, you might want to add it to your reading list, especially since Africa is considered one of the emerging markets of this century. OkayAfrica is an online magazine (and event producer) that covers all that is today’s Africa. And in honor of Women’s History Month, the media entity just debuted its premier “OkayAfrica’s 100 Women” to coincide with its March editorial theme, “Black Girls Only.”
“We proudly present 100 dope women who hail from the continent and the Diaspora—an amazing collective of visionaries, champions, pioneers and innovators,” said Antoinette Isama, OkayAfrica Associate Editor, in a press release. “These brilliant women, our seestahs, are positively impacting our lives and the lives of others across Africa and around the world.”
The list of women includes Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author Luvvie Ajayi, actress/director Issa Rae, Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, modeling icon Iman, actress Yvonne Orji, actress and playwright Danai Gurira, and South African 2016 Olympic gold track and field medallist Caster Semenya as well as lesser-known power players changing their communities and the world. There is also Phiona Mutesi, a chess prodigy from Uganda and subject of the recent Disney “Queen of Katwe” film; Farida Bedwei, information technology entrepreneur, whose cloud software is used by over 100 microfinance companies in Ghana; and Ilwad Elman, human rights and social activist from Somalia, who assist survivors of domestic violence and street children in Mogadishu, among others. The women are in a wide range of industries–from the arts to activism to business and technology.
