Was This Barber Wrong For Cutting A 1-Week-Old Baby’s Hair?

A child’s first haircut is one of many milestones in their young life, but one mother and a barber are being criticized for cutting an infant boy’s hair, with the general sentiment when watching the video being that the baby is way too young.

Instagram Photo

As you can see, the baby, whom the barber says is only 1 week old, is having a hard time coping with the haircut until his mom (finally) gives him a pacifier, begging, among many other questions, why she didn’t give him that sooner. But the biggest question here is why she felt the need to cut her child’s hair so fresh out of the womb.

The Harlem barber, who’s also being criticized for doing the cut, posted a response defending himself after the video went viral. According to him, the woman said her son’s hair needed to be cut for religious reasons and he had no choice but to respect that.

Instagram Photo

Some still refuted that explanation, questioning his inability to stand up for his own beliefs about when a child’s hair should first be cut and saying he sacrificed his morals for a few dollars.

Infant haircuts are not as uncommon as you might think, however, with a number of eastern cultures shaving boys’ heads at young ages –though none as young as 1 week old. The Chinese appear to be the fastest to cut babies’ hair, waiting just one month to shave it all off or simply trim it in modern times. As Lyuba Konopasek, assistant professor of pediatrics at the New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, told Babycenter.com, “In some cultures parents shave a newborn’s head; in others it’s customary to wait until a child can speak to cut his hair for the first time, so there’s no hard and fast rule.”

Still, those who are even considering the mothers’ religious beliefs are what prompted the haircut are still questioning why someone from her religious sect didn’t perform the ritual instead of a random barber. Obviously, there are more questions than answers regarding this situation, but do you think the barber was wrong for respecting this mother’s wishes or was he just doing his job?

I’m More Than Okay With Traveling Without My Husband

About 12 years ago, an older cousin gave me some unsolicited advice. She said, “Make sure you travel before you ever get married.” I was 23 years old at the time, and although I was seriously dating my ex-boyfriend, I was not really thinking about marriage.

traveling, traveling without husband

In response to her counsel, I gave a smirk and said, “Ok” as if I agreed. I could only assume, since I didn’t probe, that she was basically saying trying to travel whether alone or with friends after saying “I do” is a no-no. I should have responded with the question of “So, why can’t I travel after I jump the broom?” but that would have led to a bigger discussion than I had the energy for at the time.

When I was single, I never planned to cut out things in my life that I truly enjoyed, including traveling. When I was dating my husband, the topic of traveling came up (I actually had “he has to like traveling” under the “needs” section of my dating list). At that time, we discussed places that we’d visited and wanted to venture off to in the future.

Even though we weren’t engaged yet, I saw him as a person I could marry so this topic was of some importance to me. I remember naming off Switzerland as a place I wanted to visit and he quickly told me that he didn’t. Now, up to that point, we wanted to visit the same countries. When I asked him why he wasn’t interested in Switzerland, he briefly stated that he didn’t see the need to go unless there was a big event happening.

A conversation that was going well quickly went south as I kept probing to find out why he just simply didn’t want to travel to various countries for the sake of traveling. I came to the conclusion that he was the type of person who needed a reason to travel because he wasn’t one to have wanderlust. It was a little disappointing, but it wasn’t enough of a red flag to make a big deal out of it.

Eventually, I let it go and we got married the next year. We’ve been married for almost four years and his mentality on traveling remains the same, which means I’ll be traveling without him to some destinations. I’m okay with that. Thankfully, he’s also okay with that.

Just as my husband has traveled with his friends, I have and plan to do the same with my own circle of friends. Keeping our understanding in mind, I never could comprehend when people, or mainly women, assumed that their man would rather they not travel if they’re not traveling together. I think it’s based on the particular relationship and how important one’s consistent presence is to it, but there are a few benefits to traveling without your spouse — aside from the obvious.

For instance, whether you travel alone or with friends, leaving your husband behind on a trip, especially if you have children, will allow you to reconnect with who you were before marriage and family. It also gives you an opportunity to explore the world through a different lens.

And while I love spending time with my husband, it’s great when one of us travels as it gives us time to miss each other. Just because you are married doesn’t mean that you’re joined at the hip. Maintain the individual interests that you two might have. Allow yourselves the opportunity to miss each other by leaving for a certain amount of time and coming back refreshed. I believe this can contribute a great deal to keeping the marriage alive.

Maybe my cousin didn’t believe that a woman should travel after getting married. Maybe she was dating someone who didn’t think it was a good idea. But my advice for married women, and even single women, is that if you are a traveler, it’s not something you should give up on for marriage. Make sure your partner is on board with your desires and complements them, because while you can try and quell it, the desire to go on your own voyages and see new sights and sounds never goes away.

Former Knicks Dancer Hits Slam Dunk With Company Offering Nude Garments In All Shades

When’s the last time you went to a major department store and found nude undergarments that were actually “your” nude hue and not the typical beige nude? You’d probably be hard-pressed to remember such as a time.

Well, Erin Carpenter, CEO/founder of Nude Barre, got tired of not finding underwear that matched her skin tone and she did something about it. She started the company in 2009 and officially launched a product line in 2011. As a professional dancer, Carpenter typically had to wear costumes that called for nude bras and underwear, but the costumes never matched her skin and she grew frustrated. Carpenter first started searching for a solution to her own problem, then decided this was a problem she could help solve for many more women, one of which is Wendy Williams who is a Nude Barre customer.

Nude Barre offers tights, fishnets, thongs, and bralettes in all shades of nude and Carpenter talked to us about how she is growing her vision and this much-needed business.

MadameNoire (MN): What made you want to become an entrepreneur?

Erin Carpenter (EC): I always wanted to be an entrepreneur ever since I was a kid. I used to make bracelets and sell them. When I was a kid in college, I sold Mary Kay so I always wanted to be an entrepreneur but I wasn’t sure exactly how. In college, I was a dance major but a business minor.

MN: Why this product?

EC: All throughout my career, I could never find nude hosiery and undergarments that matched my skin tone and many of the costumes I had to wear demanded that you have nude undergarments. So on a weekly basis, I was dying tights, shoe, etc. and I knew there were others like me who wanted nude undergarments. Not being able to just go out and find your skin tone included in products on the market can really affect you over time. It is beyond frustrating.

MN: How did fund your startup?

EC: Initially, I just used my dancer savings. I also borrowed from family and friends.

MN: Why did you decide to make your products Eco-friendly?

EC:  We use recycled materials to make the yarn and other material. We wanted to create something that not only felt good to the customer but also contributed to a healthy Earth.

MN: How does Nude Barre stand out from other companies offering “nude” undergarments for women of color?

EC: Currently, we’re the only brand that has 12 shades and that is the most shades. Most of the other brands are making an average seven hues. But think of your skin from season to season, you may need several different shades throughout the year. In summer you may have a little more coloring, for example. Most of our customers wear two shades.

MN: What have been some challenges in growing your business?

EC: When I first launched it there was a lack of understanding that nude should not be one shade. That it is not okay–we live in a global world! Even when I was pitching to stores it was like reeducating someone. And it is not just Black women who need these shades–all women need the variety of nude shades. Now, more people are getting the concept, and that is awesome.

MN: How are you marketing the company?

EC: We use social media a lot. Instagram wasn’t around when we first got started but now it is a great tool for us to connect directly with our individual customers. Our website also has a list of stores that carry the products, or you can order online.

MN: What’s next for Nude Barre?

EC: Right now we are working on a bra. We want to debut it this summer.

MN: What do you like most about being an entrepreneur?

EC: The thing I love most is getting the positive feedback. I look at Nude Barre as a women’s empowerment brand. By offering customers something they need and that they have not been able to find in the general market, it’s empowering. Finding hosiery and undergarments that match your skin tone really is empowering.

Rihanna courtside Last night was Game 1 of the NBA Finals between last year's champs, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the team with the best record in the league, the Golden State Warriors. Of course, it was a star-studded event, and one celebrity who was courtside was Rihanna. But the truth is, she's always courtside. For the last few years, she's been a mainstay at NBA games around the country. However, her favorite team is, well, whoever LeBron James plays for. And while she was focused on the game, we were checking out her ensemble for the night. Per the usual, whether she's jumping out of the car, going to dinner, headed to the studio or hitting the red carpet, Rihanna is always chic. Check out her most colorful courtside looks from over the years, literally from head to toe. Rihanna This outfit was from the days when she was dating MLB player Matt Kemp. We're digging the jacket! Loving the dramatic leather top and rollover leather bag. It matches her toes and lip! Who remembers redhead RiRi? All black everything from head to toe (literally her haircut and toes are black). The gold choker with the red statement lip was a nice touch! What can we say? Rihanna is a lover of accent colors. Check out the pink hair, pink nails, pink bag and pink heels. Rihanna courtside Even when she's laid back she's fashionable. Who else is lovin' the booties? Embroidered sweats with Chanel accessories and a backwards cap? We might not be able to pull it off, but you know Rihanna can. Rihanna courtside You can't go wrong with a sweater dress and Nike Air Max sneakers. Courtside comfort indeed. Rihanna courtside Rihanna gave us baseball fashions at the basketball game. She paired her jersey with heeled sneakers and decorative tights. Rihanna courtside You can never go wrong with a graphic T-shirt. Rihanna accessorized with a bucket hat, strappy heels and a gold chain. The best way to sell your products is to wear them. Hence the reason the beauty wore her uber popular Puma creepers courtside with a playful "Spoiled" top and skirt. Whenever with family, go for comfort. Rihanna paired a loose crop top with a metallic skirt, Fila cap, gold chains and New Balance sneakers.   Rihanna courtside With her Puma windbreaker, wine lip and strappy white heels, she took athleisure to the next level. After becoming the first woman to compete in the Miss Minnesota pageant while wearing a hijab and burkini in November, Halima Aden has had nowhere to go but up. She’s been on the cover of the CR Fashion Book, been interviewed by fellow Somali model and icon Iman, walked runway shows for Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 5, Max Mara and Alberta Ferretti, and now, she’s on the cover of an issue of Vogue. Big tings!

She’s the first woman to wear a hijab on the cover of the legendary fashion magazine.

Aden is front and center for the June issue of Vogue Arabia, and the 19-year-old is serving fierce fashion and faces, even with her adorable braces. The Somali-American beauty appeared in a feature for the magazine in April, and as the cover star, she’s talking about representation in the fashion world. “Every little girl deserves to see a role model that’s dressed like her, resembles her or even has the same characteristics as her,” she said in a behind-the-scenes video during her photo shoot. But Aden also made it clear in Vogue Arabia in April that she wants those who see her to know that she’s much more than just a model wearing a hijab.

“When I’m walking the runway I want people to see that, yes, I’m wearing a hijab – but I’m also a million other things,” Aden said. “I want us to get to a place where we just see women.” We definitely see her, and she’s quite the stunner. Here’s to more success and slayage for the model.

Laila Ali

The death of boxing legend Muhammad Ali last summer (June 4, 2016) was one that shook the entire world. Nearly a year after ending his longtime fight with Parkinson’s disease, his daughter Laila Ali has come forward to celebrate his fruitful legacy.

Laila, one of Ali’s nine children, who is an author, television personality, and fellow boxer, told  that her father was someone “who really stayed true to himself” and “believed” in what he stood for.

She also shared her gratitude for the unwavering support from friends, family, and even strangers who appreciated his efforts not only as a professional boxer but a civil rights activist. However, Ali explained that the amount of recognition and tribute didn’t surprise her at all.

“My father, no matter where he would go, he would bring people to tears … so I wasn’t really surprised by the outpouring that there was when he passed away. But it was appreciated that people cared so much,” Ali continued.

Aside from musing about conversations she shared with her father, Laila plans to continue to share Muhammad’s legacy with her debut cookbook, Food for Life: Delicious & Healthy Comfort Food From My Table To Yours!

With a slated publish date of January 2018, the book offers over 100, real-life recipes that are delicious. From Stovetop Ratatouille to Oven-“Fried” Chicken, West Coast Southern Greens and Heavenly Lemon Yogurt Cake, there’s something for everyone to try their hand at in the kitchen.

“My father and I both have always had a love affair with tasty homemade meals and comfort foods. Another thing my father loved was a great burger at some of the local burger joints he encountered during his worldwide travels. So when my dad was still alive and well, to surprise him during one of my trips to visit him in Arizona, I shared with him that I named one of his favorite burgers after him. It’s called ‘The Ali Burger,” Ali said.

When the news hit that LaLa Anthony and Carmelo Anthony were splitting, social media was set ablaze, per usual. There were GIFs, rants, and just commentary overall on the new status of their relationship ranging from outraged to dramatic and comical. And as strangers didn’t take the news well, we can only imagine how their 10-year-old son Kiyan reacted.

In a recent interview with ExtraTV, Anthony spoke about how she explained the situation between her and his father to Kiyan. While she said she tried to give him excuses as to why the paparazzi were out in full effect during their family Mother’s Day outing, which included her estranged husband, he didn’t believe them.

“He said, ‘Mom, the photographers have been following me everywhere,’” she reenacts, giggling. “I said, “Well, it’s getting hot outside, and they’re trying to get summer fashions for the magazines.’ Then he followed up and said, ‘Well mom, I’m wearing a sweatsuit. That’s not summer fashions.’”

When the interviewer followed up by asking LaLa and Carmelo have said to their son about their split, she offered, “We explain it in a way that works for a 10-year-old.”

What Free Time? 8 Ways Kids Will Totally Change Your Social Life

$

kids change your social life "You won't be able to take these kinds of trips as often, but you'll take different trips, and those can be great too," was the honest advice my father gave me when I found myself in a very emotional second trimester a few years ago and facing what could very well be my last trip to Drake's OVOFest ever. Before I actually became a parent one of my biggest fears is that I would no longer have time for friends or even fun in general. I thought my social life would become a mess of birthday parties, baby and me yoga and a TV that would eventually have some Disney Jr. image permanently burned into the screen. In all actuality, only some of those things are true. Becoming a parent for the first time will change your social life, but it doesn't always have to be for the worst like some memes would like you to believe. Here a few ways that kids will totally change your social life, and sometimes for the better: kids change your social life

1. You’ll feel a sudden affinity for other parents.

Even before I had my own child, I was never very judgmental or condescending when I saw a parent peeling their hysterical kid from a store shelf of Twizzlers and or even a mom who was pushed to her breaking point abandon a cart in the middle of the Walmart checkout because her kid just can’t come to terms with the fact that he cannot get the damn Lego Ninjago. Now that I can relate to the nightmare that can sometimes be taking a toddler out in public, I also can appreciate and applaud the small wins that parents have with their kids in public. Just this morning I couldn’t help but notice a mom with a baby strapped to her front and a 4-year-old tucked in the window seat next to her. As we rode the mother pointed out the numbers on the train stops, discussed being safe on public transportation and proceeded to give her child detailed instructions on how’d they maneuver through the crowded car to the door at their stop. When we got to 30th street they all exited in only the graceful way a mom with two kids can during the morning rush. You know I had to give her a high five through the window right? Once you become a parent you have to count the small wins and if that means clearing a briefcase and a cane with your kids to safely get off at your stop so be it. kids change your social life

 2. You’ll get unsolicited criticism AND compliments.

I’m sure you’ve seen parenting post and listicles alike about all of the unsolicited parenting advice that will come your way once you have a child both from folks who haven’t parented since In Living Color debuted and folks who have never parented a damn houseplant let alone a human being. But what parents may not have told you is that unsolicited compliments can be just as awkward as the unwanted advice. Because sometimes I just want to go to CVS to pick up my prescription, not spend twenty minutes with you offering my child your whole Hershey’s inventory because she’s so damn adorable. I promise you I don’t mean to be ungrateful, but it’s hilarious to me when strangers go on and on about how quiet and well-behaved my kid is after knowing them for three minutes when I know that as soon as we hit the parking lot she’ll go full “Caillou” and have a mini target practice with the pigeons and a fist full of M&Ms.

3. You’ll have to strategize going to ATM’s and gas stations.

There was a time when I thought drive-thru pharmacies and ATM’s were just about the laziest thing ever until I experienced the "joy" that is the three-point system car seat system. My daughter cried like Leo just floated away on an ice patch in front of a sinking Titanic when I was three feet away from her pumping gas last night. The crisis? She couldn’t see me and Elmo fell on the floor. There is no such thing as a “quick run” to do anything when you have kids in car seats. So you might as well pencil in getting gas in between getting your IUD inserted and doing your taxes. Trust me, it will require just as much planning. kids change your social life

4. You’ll have the best excuse to miss things.

Because your BFF can only be but so mad at you for skipping out on her birthday sushi dinner when your kid has a fever…of 100.2 degrees. The truth is they’re probably going to be OK and you’re probably just a flake, but being as brittle as a Hot Pocket crust is acceptable when you’re someone’s mom because hey, toddlers happen. I hate to break it to you, but you can only use your kids as an excuse for so long before folks begin to catch on that you’re actually just getting your Tony The Tiger on for stuff you rather not do and not necessarily Mother of The Year. kids change your social life

5. But now you don’t have an excuse to ditch the 7th level of hell that can be a kid’s party.

When you don’t have a kid you can totally get out of not looking like a complete awkward weirdo for attending a kids’ birthday party without an actual kid to accompany. Now that you have a mini-version of your DNA that can accept an invite, it gets really hard to decline on the germs, the chaos, the germs, the mess, the screaming, the crying and did I mention the germs? You’ll have to stock up on sick days because kids parties can be a great source for everything from salmonella to athlete’s foot. ids change your social life

6. People without kids will not understand the depth of understanding you’ll gain for kid culture.

One day you will wake up and know the all the words to  the Sophia The First theme song and completely blank on name of that really cute guy you crushed on in freshman biology and you won’t know WTF happened. You’ll obsess over how Chase and Marshall will rescue Chickaletta for the millionth time and watch Paw Patrol long after your kid settles down for a nap. Your toddler will skip around singing incomprehensible lyrics to Disney Jr. shows and you’ll know what she’s singing based off the first three notes alone while non-parents try to decipher the ditty you both seem to know so well. You’ll realize that you’ll never be young and fly again, but that Miles from Tomorrowland has the best hook ever. kids change your social life

7. They turn cheap movie dates into something you have to budget for.

Remember the good old days when movies were $1.00. OK, neither do I. Movies have always been pretty expensive during my lifetime especially since IMAX became a thing, so it’s all the more reason why you might want to budget and plan for taking your kids to see Captain Underpants this weekend. You might want to hit up your local Dollar Tree, find hiding places for snacks and practice your spiel about how the Reese Cups from the dollar store are the same ones they are going to charge you $3.50 for in the theater. Either that or be prepared to make it a Netflix night. kids change your social life

8. They’ll make all those activities you abandoned something you really enjoy again.

Bowling was about the most boring thing in the world to me, until last weekend when I was beat by a two-year-old in a toddler size 6 bowling shoe that I never knew existed, but was about the cutest thing ever. We were too busy trying to livestream her “I Did It Dance” to even register that this was an activity that we had done almost every weekend at some point, and now you couldn’t tell us we weren’t damn near ziplining over the Las Vegas strip.  Admittedly, toddlers will destroy any sense of a social life you had before you became a parent, but they have a really great way of making you look at the whole world for the first time all over again. After celebrating 64 years of life in March, iconic chanteuse Chaka Khan has decided to continue her contributions to the culture with a new exciting endeavor.

As reported by The Grio, Khan is reportedly launching an independent record label this week under the name iKhan Sounds. In addition to signing fresh talent, the indie label is said to support her upcoming musical efforts.

Although the singer herself has yet make an official statement about the label, sources claim the new direction is a strategic move to give Khan control over her music and its profits, according to Grio. For the decades that Khan’s brought us groovy, feel good tunes, she’s been signed to a number of major record labels like Warner Bros, ABC, and Reprise.

To celebrate her new venture, Khan is also reportedly to be releasing a song called “I Love Myself” on June 16. As of now, this is a great look for Khan, but we’ll have to wait and see what truly comes of iKhan Sounds.

As the time dwindles on the countdown to SZA’s coveted debut album, fans are building up tons of anticipation on social media after she finally revealed the LP’s cover art and a friendly PSA that finally offered her release date last week.

With a week left, TDE’s first lady kindly gifted waiting fans with her third single, “Broken Clocks.” And in true SZA fashion, the song highlights the ebbs and flows of love with her soft, utopian-like vocals gliding over silky production.

“All I got is these broken clocks/ I ain’t got no time/Just burning daylight,” she sings on the track, which flaunts an interpolation of River Timber’s “West” featuring Toronto crooner Daniel Caesar. “Still love and it’s still love, and it’s still love,” she harps on the chorus for assurance.

SZA’s debut project CTRL drops June 9. Stream “Broken Clocks” on Apple MusicTidal or Spotify.

shawntia Hardaway

Singer Mario has spent the past few years under the radar, but every now and then he sets music world on fire with hit singles like “Somebody Else” and “Break Up”. In sad news, the singer took to Instagram late Friday night to share with fans the sad news that his mother recently passed away:

Instagram Photo

Details have not been released about Shawntia Hardaway’s death, but Mario has always been open about his mother’s struggle with a heroin addiction even bringing their story to the MTV documentary, I Won’t Love You to Death: The Story of Mario and His Mom in 2007. In the doc, the singer tries to help his mother overcome her drug use.

Their relationship was tumultuous as relationships can be when substance abuse is involved. In October 2010, Mario was charged with second-degree assault after allegedly pushing his mother. He was released from a Baltimore jail after posting $50,000 bond. Shortly after, Hardaway dropped the charges. In response to the event, Mario’s lawyer, Hassan Murphy III, disclosed to CNN:

“Anyone who has waged the battle to save loved ones from the forces of drugs knows the irrational behavior that almost always accompanies their actions.”

In 2011, the mother and son even hosted a charity event for the Mario Do Right Foundation, which works to create a support system for kids who, like Mario, are raised by addicts and recovering addicts. The event raised over $50,000.

Addiction can be a difficult for not just those who are abusing substances, but for their loved ones as well. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding her death, our thoughts are with Mario and his family at this tragic time.

“What better way for you to honor your son than by obtaining your high school diploma?” were the words spoken to Lezley McSpadden in a conversation with Jennings School District Superintendent, Art McCoy. McSpadden had revealed that she dropped out of Ladue Horton Watkins High School her junior year after giving birth to Brown about two decades ago. McSpadden also shared that the police shooting of her son Michael Brown in 2014 motivated her to go back to school. Brown had recently graduated high school before he was killed.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that McSpadden enrolled in the program in September and worked  toward her diploma at Jennings High School along with her daughter, Deja Brown making sure their schedules didn’t overlap. Superintendent McCoy expressed that McSpadden didn’t want to divert attention away from the other students. The adult program began in September after McSpadden met with the district about collaborating with her nonprofit, Michael O.D. Brown We Love Our Sons and Daughters Foundation.

Daughter Deja, who graduated along with her mom on Friday, May 26 at St. Louis’ Chaifetz Arena, shared that attending school with her mother wasn’t an issue:

“She would just go to afternoon class, so we never really interacted at school or in class or anything, but I did help her on homework. Like, math, she was like, ‘I’m stuck! I don’t understand this!’ so I would try to help her the best I could, because it was Geometry, which I took already.”

Deja is celebrating her own accomplishments but also keeping in mind the long road traveled by her mother:

“I can’t really believe that I made it out of high school.”

“ I know it’s something that she’s wanted to do. She’s done it and she’s worked really hard, and she’s so excited and I’m excited for her!”

The St. Louis American reports Deja Brown will attend Tennessee State University in the fall to begin studies to become a neonatal nurse. She is already working in healthcare, with a job at a Schnucks Pharmacy and plans to become a certified pharmacy technician in June.

The family’s lawyer, Benjamin Crump posted pictures of the celebratory moment to Instagram and noted that McSpadden shared with him she “has a purpose now to try to uphold the legacy of her son.” While handing the 37-year-old her diploma, McCoy noted, “She took time to finish what she started.”

Giving Up The Ghost? Omari Hardwick Is Working On A Spoken Word Album

omari hardwick is working on an album

Omari Hardwick is a man of many talents, and it just so happens we might get a glimpse at one of them that we don’t get to see too often. Personally, I was sold after his scene with Gabby Union on Being Mary Jane where they got it popping in her foyer. At that point dude could make paper airplanes and I’d applaud, but I digress. It turns out in addition to giving us some more of his character “Ghost” when new episodes of Power return on June 25, Hardwick has also been hitting up the music studio.

EBONY reports that fans of TV One’s Verses and Flow may already be familiar with the poetic stylings of Mr. Hardwick as the actor serves as host and performed pieces of his own on many occasions. It now appears the 43-year-old actor is working on a full-length project entitled Later Decatur.

Hardwick teamed up with singer-songwriter Josiah Bell earlier this year for “Bloodshed”, a mournful piece on horrific happenings domestically and abroad, which helped his cope with his own sense of loss. In an interview with VIBE he was clear about the fact that poetry is his calling and not rap:

“As a poet, I would always hear emcees come up to me and say, ‘Yo, you should rap,’ and I was like, ‘No.’ You know, the label was tough for me.’”

“I’m a poet. I was proud of that distinction between the two, not wanting to be the other. So, I think just in terms of what God’s call for me was, I think I was to pop in a world of visibility as an actor prior to audibility as a musician…People were seeing me enough that they might listen to something I had to say even if they didn’t necessarily receive it. They’d at least give it a shot.”

No word on when the album will drop but it’s definitely being worked on. Even better? The project will be produced by some pretty heavy hitters in the music industry including R&B singer Eric Roberson, singer-songwriter Raphael Saadiq, and jazz musician, Robert Glasper. The men have worked with artists like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Common and Stevie Wonder to name a few.

Looks like Hardwick has all the right pieces in place and we hope he shares more of his hidden talent with us soon. You can take a look at part of the creative process he chose to post to Instagram below:
