With his own BET reality show Curvy Style garnering the attention of many, Snell has created a edgy new swimwear collection that helps curvy women go from beachwear to streetwear with ease alongside Always For Me.

Collaborating with the plus-size fashion, he created a 24-piece capsule collection boasting of color-block tankinis and graphic print one-pieces, mesh hooded maxis, kimonos and hipster pants. According to Snell, the line that features a super contemporary flair isn’t just about fashion, but giving curvy women confidence.

Black-ish actress Yara Shahidi is certainly on our hair inspiration list. From her coolly intricate braided updos to carefree tousled and textured curls, there’s no style she can’t rock. So, how can you get the same slay yourself?

Well, for Shahidi, she’s all about maintaining the health of her hair. “I have always been very natural with my hair,” she explained in an interview with Byrdie. “It really wasn’t until the request of some acting jobs I had to straighten it. What I realized is just how damaging heat is. While it does give you really cool options and allows you to do different takes on hairstyles, I had to deal with a lot of heat damage from straightening my hair or curling my hair with heat.”

After dealing with severe heat damage that forced her to cut six inches of her mane off last summer, her hair has shown her tons of love back in return. “I’ve been able to have so much fun with it,” she gushed.

Shahidi went on to explain that she swears by just a few products for her coily coif. “Almond oil, a great gel, and deep conditioners are all fantastic for curly hair like mine. I love the Mielle Deep Conditioner ($14) and Almond Oil ($13). I think those really do help with my hair. And then EcoStyler is a $3 gel that I swear by because it’s not always about the most expensive product, but the most efficient.”

Well, there you have it ladies. A good deep conditioner, some almond oil, and good ole’ EcoStyler gel is all it takes.

Last weekend, La La Anthony hit the red carpet of VH1’s Dear Mama Mother’s Day tribute scoring 10’s across the board for the slayage she served in a cherry red Zachary gown paired with gold gladiator heels and accessories.

But aside from her dress and accompanying accessories, it was the finishing touch of her crown that turned heads. Opting for a simple and sleek low ponytail that wouldn’t take too much distraction from the full ensemble, celebrity hair stylist Nikki Nelms added a gold leaf foil finish to her middle part. Fly and festive, right?

WOW. WOW. WOW 🏆🏆🏆 #dearmama

You Might Want To Retire The ‘Tussin: Study Shows Grandparents Childcare May Be Harming Your Kids

grandparent childcare harmful to kidsIt’s unfortunately becoming way too common to see a news headline that reads, “Infant Dies At Local Daycare” or “Toddler In Critical Condition After Being Assaulted By Childcare Worker”. In addition to expensive childcare costs and seriously questioning what other adults consider safe and holistic care for my kid, I literally thank God every day for the two sets of retired grandparents that are in my support system that most weeks are bickering over who gets to keep my daughter for the day. However, if you didn’t already have a healthy helping of parent paranoia, a new study says that “to Grandmother’s house we go” may not be the safest bet for your child either.

According to a recent study if Mee Maw is using butter to treat burns, rubbing liquor on gums for teething relief or using Tussin to treat any and everything, your child could be at risk. CNN reports research presented at the 2017 Pediatric Academics Societies meeting on Thursday surveyed grandparents on child care techniques such as putting children on their sides to sleep, having loose bedding in a crib and using ice baths to lower a high fever which most child-care experts today would agree are outdated guidelines for care and could be possibly putting your child in harm’s way.

In a questionnaire given to 636 self-identified grandparents nearly a quarter were unaware that the safest sleeping position for babies was on their backs, and that sleeping on the sides or back puts the infant at major risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, the leading cause of death among babies between 1 month and 1 year of age. 68% of participants also were unaware that cuts and scrapes heal better when covered (because Grand Daddy always said, “You gotta let the air get to it.”) Researchers attribute the lack of information to the learning curve that older caregivers may experience with information that changes daily and possibly not being around other caregivers to exchange information.

Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York and lead author of the study, says that grandfather may not always know best and that just because your parents raised you and you turned out OK, doesn’t mean their parenting methods are the best:

“We shouldn’t assume that just because they’ve raised a child before, they’re experts.”

As a fairly new parent and former parenting educator, one of the ideas that I emphasized in my classes that were mostly made up of teenage parents and parents under the age of 25, is that the great thing about becoming a mother or father is embracing the opportunity to raise your children as you see fit.  For example, my mother’s version of the “sex talk” was, “Don’t have sex and you won’t get pregnant.” Now that I have a daughter of my own, I’ve become dedicated to raising her in a household of sex positivity where she is educated about the way her body works and encouraged to communicate honestly to me about her thoughts and feelings, even if it’s uncomfortable for me to hear. So on some level I see where Dr. Adesman is coming from.

But there is a flip side to it. Once I became a parent myself, I learned that you won’t be able to navigate the day-to-day of your child’s upbringing and your own sanity (which will be tested if you have a toddler or teen) with merely a book approved by the American Association of Pediatrics. Much of parenting comes from your gut, experience and getting to know your individual child and your unique parenting style. Very few situations in parenting are as easy as “have your child facing backwards in the car until age two” and “no aspirin for children under the age of 19”. As a parent you learn to balance when to take advice from someone who has spent a fraction of their adulthood studying child development from a book or the person who sat in steamy shower with you when you cried throughout the night because you didn’t know how to blow your nose just yet.

Look I get it: There are certain guidelines that have been scientifically proven to keep your child safe, but admittedly the last thing I want to consult in the middle of the night when I have a colicky infant who has been crying for three hours straight are stuffy AAP guidelines on how to get her to stop crying. Most days I’d like to believe that Pop Pop has the best of intentions when he’s reaching for the Tussin for a tummy ache or when Glammy thinks you should add cereal to bottle because your 6-month-old is looking a tad bit scrawny. The power in parenting is that even if you are limited on childcare options, you have every right to sit the grands down and tell them that you don’t want Tussin within two feet of your kid regardless of how you were raised.

As a new parent and recovering perfectionist, I remember the anxiety and guilt that came with thinking I didn’t do every single thing according to Dr. Sears or my child would grow up to regularly resent me and spend thousands of dollars on therapy just to find out all the bad things in life happened to her because of me. I obsessed over matching bottle tops, having a certain number of onesies in her diaper bag and thought, “There goes any chance she had at nuclear physics,” anytime she hit her head.  So the last thing I want to hear is that the woman who thinks I need my asthma inhaler every time I clear my throat should be added to the list of crib bumpers and unsecured IKEA dressers. Ironically the study found that even the pro’s could use a child safety refresher: In a previous study, Adesman surveyed pediatricians and found that only 24% answered all 12 questions about basic safety information correctly.

So what IS the best way to keep your kids safe?  In my opinion it’s surrounding them by people you trust that love them as much as you do, consulting a professional when you’re at a loss, communicating with your support system about what’s best for YOUR child and an occasional Google search about deodorant ingestion (because toddlers). It may be time to retire the Tussin, but rest assured my parents are clocking in for childcare duty tomorrow at 9:00 sharp.

Color-Contoured Lashes — Would You Try It?

Another day, another crazy beauty trend.

While many of us look to a bold statement lip or eye-catching eyeliner to amp up our ensembles, there’s a new makeup trend making waves: color-contoured lashes. First spotted on Pinterest, the look is surely an adventure even though it’s best described as low-effort with high-impact.

In a video collaboration between Harper’s Bazaar and L’Oréal Paris, they break down the easy step-by-step way to achieve the fabulous look. First, they swipe a few coats of primer to the ends of curled lashes and apply blue mascara only to the tips. Combing from root to tip, they then remove excess mascara and top off the bottom lashes with a dust of black, and voila!

The results? An enviable ombré effect that subtle yet head turning. Who doesn’t love switching it up?

Click here and here to see how it’s done.

Apparently, An Acne Vaccine Is On The Way

$

According to researchers at UC San Diego, 85% of people experienced the wrath of acne at some point in their life. For others, it’s been an ongoing issue that doesn’t seem to let up, and then there’s that 15% that somehow got lucky and bypassed zits, pimples, cysts and all.

Well, for those that are well acquainted with acne, there have been major strides made in treating it. Whether it’s Accutane, antibiotics, or topical retinoids like Differin, there are various ways to handle outbreaks, but researchers have noted that “there are no appropriate therapeutic modalities that are long-lasting and systemically effective” at reducing P. acnes bacteria (the causative bacterial agent in acne vulgaris). So, when it comes to the treatments, they are usually reactive and are used after acne lesions are present. Not to mention, when the treatment is concluded, acne always has the potential to come back even more aggressive.

However, the aforementioned researchers have revealed that there’s an acne vaccine in the works. Now that’s pretty revolutionary stuff, right?

P. acnes secrete a toxic protein on the skin that causes inflammation, but the vaccine would serve as an antibody to the protein, Allure reports. The vaccine won’t kill the bacteria itself, as P. acnes is beneficial in some ways – it’s the gram-positive bacteria found in your hair, neck, face, and intestines, and some strains even destroy viruses trying to enter the skin, one of the lead researchers, Eric C. Huang explained. But the acne vaccine will be able to do more than prevent pimples, helping with with endocarditis, endophthalmitis, osteomyelitis, as well as joint, nervous system, and cranial neurosurgery infections.

Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and associate clinical professor, department of dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center, shared her thoughts on the vaccine, offering “Acne is a multifactorial condition, meaning that it is usually caused by a multitude of things (hormones, excessive sebum, bacterial overgrowth, clogged pores, inflammation), and since not all acne is caused by each of these issues, it will be difficult to have a vaccine that treats all forms of acne.” But, if proven to be successful, Tanzi is on board for recommending it: “Acne causes severe psychologic stress to millions of young people every year (not to mention the lasting effects of the scars). If it can be avoided, that would be an amazing gift to millions of people who would otherwise have to suffer.”

Ladies, what do you think? Would you try an acne vaccine?

Ladies, it’s that time to switch out your sweaters and jeans for tank tops and bathing suits and frolic in the sun. And as the summertime kicks into full gear, it’s always important to have your beauty routine prepared, especially when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays that can wreak havoc in as little as 15 minutes.

With statistics proving 78% of millennials never wear sunscreen or only wear it to the beach, super cool beauty brand Glossier has introduced a sunscreen that we’re already obsessing over. Dubbed Invisible Shield, it’s a daily sunscreen with SPF 35 that protects against UVA/UVB rays AND pollution like smog and carbon monoxide. Hints it’s name, the sunscreen goes on clear and doesn’t leave the unsightly white cast most products do.

Glossier founder Emily Weiss also noted that its application is “like water,” because nothing’s worse than greasy sunscreen. And the smell? Sweet notes of orange essential oil were added to the formula. For the ladies out there with sensitive skin, Glossier promises that Invisible Shield is never enough to irritate your skin or make you more sun-sensitive.

In addition to sun protection, the ingredients are a powerful mix of vitamin E, vitamin P, broccoli, and aloe leaf extract to neutralize free radicals inside skin.

Visit Glossier.com to get Invisible Shield today for $34.

14 Mantras For A Better Monday

https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbxw9Pjpmc/?tagged=mondaymotivation Most of us don't feel like this meme when we wake up Monday morning. Most of us are asking ourselves why we have to get up and go to our crappy job, why we have to work at all, why there isn't an extra day between Saturday and Sunday -- you know how it goes. And while those are all very valid, yet pointless questions, they don't exactly put you in the mood to make your Monday better than you feel when your alarm goes off. Sometimes you have to look a bit outside of yourself for motivation, perhaps to a mantra even, something that makes you not just get out of the bed but tackle the day with enthusiasm. It's easier said than done, but with these mantras we think you'll get on the good foot, even if you don't wake up on the right side of the bed. Or at least asking yourself the following question. https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbxveSjEaX/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzUHLD_7q/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzTsKB-SW/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzPymAvxK/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzMkaghfJ/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzBWvlV40/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSby-i4AjML/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSby7BdlTT8/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSby47Ug3ap/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbyvjEFVK8/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzLM9jdea/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbzSqJA7yl/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbyveNlYBY/?tagged=mondaymotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/BSbyt5rjAIB/?tagged=mondaymotivation

How Healthy Vs Unhealthy Couples Handles These Issues

$

0
[caption id="attachment_830547" align="alignleft" width="1068"] Bigstockphoto.com/Beautiful young Afro American couple is holding detergents talking and smiling while sitting on the floor in kitchen after cleaning it[/caption] The couples who last don’t do so because they never fight. All couples fight! But the ones who get past it, and manage to still laugh, love each other, cuddle and have sex as if those fights never happened do so because they handle their fights in the right way. When handled incorrectly, a quarrel can just set the tone for your relationship moving forward. Unhealthy fighting tactics make you and your partner a little more distant and a little less in love after each dispute. Just because a fight is over doesn’t mean it isn’t still in your systems, affecting the way you treat and feel about one another. And if it’s still in your systems, you can’t be happy. Here is how healthy versus unhealthy couples deal with these common relationship issues. [caption id="attachment_693332" align="alignleft" width="418"] Corbis Images[/caption]

A sex deficit; the healthy way

All couples can become busy and just forget to make time for sex. Healthy couples focus on making each other feel desired and attractive when this happens. They come up with ways to have sex—even if that means popping into their partner’s office on a lunch break. If they have to, they schedule sex! It’s in the shared Google calendar.       [caption id="attachment_618952" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

Unhealthy couples tend to take a sex deficit personally. Rather than bring it up to their partner, they start in on passive aggressive tactics like rejecting their partner’s advances if and when they do want to have sex. Or even accusing the other person of not finding them attractive anymore.     [caption id="attachment_713081" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Feeling under-prioritized; the healthy way

Usually, if your partner isn’t prioritizing you enough—maybe his work or family is taking up a lot of his time—he doesn’t even realize it. Healthy couples just bring it up. They feel safe saying, “I miss you! I don’t feel like I get enough time with you lately. Can we do something about that?” And they put a date night, for just the two of them, on the books.       [caption id="attachment_607975" align="alignleft" width="419"]No Love On Tinder Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

Unhealthy couples tend to keep score and think about winning and losing. In an unhealthy relationship, if someone feels her partner isn’t making enough time for her, she will just do it right back at him. In other words, she’ll cancel plans on him, or make herself so busy that she can’t see her partner. This obviously doesn’t get anybody anywhere.       [caption id="attachment_615920" align="alignleft" width="457"]End A Casual Dating Relationship Corbis Images[/caption]

Failure to listen; they healthy way

Your partner doesn’t mean to tune you out; he probably just has a lot on his mind. Healthy couples don’t take it personally. They’ll even say, “I can tell now isn’t a good time. But I do want to talk to you about this. Can you let me know when you’re ready to listen?”         [caption id="attachment_697899" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

The unhealthy couple feels insecure when they aren’t listened to. So they’ll stop sharing things with their partner entirely. And, when their partner talks, they, too, won’t listen.               [caption id="attachment_707855" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Whose friends you see more; the healthy way

It’s pretty common that couples end up spending more time with one person’s friends than the other. In a healthy relationship, if a person feels that they don’t see their friends enough, they’ll just tell their partner how important it is that he gets to know their friends. And they will make a plan that is easy for their partner to get on board with, that lets them see their friends.

The unhealthy way

Unhealthy couples will just stop hanging out with one another’s friends. If a woman feels her partner doesn’t invest enough in her friends then she just stops investing in his. She stops inviting her partner along to hang out with her friends, too. Before they know it, the couple is just living separate lives.         [caption id="attachment_697220" align="alignleft" width="468"] Shutterstock.com/Candlelight dinner[/caption]

The romance is dying; the healthy way

After you’ve been together for a while, you may start eating your own separate frozen dinners and feeling like roommates rather than lovers. In a healthy relationship, if somebody wants more romance, they just create it. They’ll plan a romantic night to remind their partner how nice that feels, and how important that is for their bond.         [caption id="attachment_718848" align="alignleft" width="439"] Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

Unhealthy couples will just feel insecure and pull away even more, acting increasingly like roommates. If the woman in the unhealthy pair feels the romance has died, rather than try to spark it, she will intentionally eat dinner before her partner gets home rather than wait 20 minutes for him, just to make a point. (He usually doesn’t get the point).       [caption id="attachment_719469" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Cleanliness; the healthy way

Cleanliness should be one of the easiest issues to address as a couple. It’s not like you’re criticizing someone’s personality; just the way they put away dishes! Healthy couples find a way to lovingly, with humor, bring up their partner’s cleanliness issues.         [caption id="attachment_695505" align="alignleft" width="500"]woman upset, staring, angry Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

Unhealthy couples will become very passive aggressive. They’ll think their partner’s lack of cleanliness is a personal insult. They won’t say anything about it; they’ll just become increasingly irritated and cold towards their partner until they explode.           [caption id="attachment_220080" align="alignleft" width="500"]"Couple having coffee pf" Shutterstock.com[/caption]

Jealousy; the healthy way

Presuming there is no reason to be jealous (i.e. nobody is actually cheating, emotionally or otherwise) healthy couples bring it up, but don’t point blame. If a woman feels jealous about her partner’s female coworker who clearly flirts with him, but he just can’t see it, she’ll just say, “I know you don’t even see it because you’re adorably clueless, but your coworker has a crush on you. Could you just, like, not have solo drinks with her?” [caption id="attachment_698400" align="alignleft" width="421"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

Unhealthy couples are masters at internalizing. If someone in an unhealthy relationship feels jealous, rather than bring it up, they start to look for signs their partner is cheating or doing something wrong. They project their jealousy onto their partner (even if he’s doing nothing wrong). They’ll even find ways to make him jealous.       [caption id="attachment_607653" align="alignleft" width="610"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Finances; the healthy way

Sometimes you see your partner mishandling money, in a way that will make your shared financial goals as a couple hard to reach. In a healthy relationship, if someone sees this happening, they remind their partner of their monetary goals (have a house one day, send a child to college…) [caption id="attachment_697920" align="alignleft" width="468"] Shutterstock[/caption]

The unhealthy way

In an unhealthy relationship, the person good with money thinks the person who isn’t good with money just doesn’t care much about the relationship. So to get back at them, they, too, will start mishandling money.

How Model And Musician Demi Grace Keeps Her Locs Looking Fresh

demi grace locs

On March 22, Demi Grace became the first model to wear locs in a Pantene Campaign. The musician and model was one of many Black women to star in the ad for the brand’s newly launched Gold Series product line, demonstrating the beauty of our various hairstyles and hair textures and celebrating strong, beautiful strands.

Demi’s appearance in the campaign certainly turned many heads, and because locs rarely get the attention they deserve in the mainstream, we reached out to the singer to hear more about her loc journey, stereotypes surrounding locs, and how she keeps her hair healthy.

MadameNoire (MN): How long have you had locs, what made you decide to grow them?

Demi Grace (GC): I’ve had locs for almost a year now. I always love trying new hairstyles and locs felt like the perfect style to work for me as both a pop artist and commercial model.

MN: What was the growth process like for you?

GC: I started out with faux locs and I am letting it permanently lock. I love length and I definitely wanted my locs to be long but it depends on the hairstyle. Short hair is very attractive as well.

MN: Has it been a struggle to find products that penetrate your locs and keep your hair healthy?

GC: It hasn’t been a struggle to find products for my locs. In fact, I would say this hairstyle has been the easiest for me to maintain. When it comes to penetrating my locs, I really like to focus on my scalp and the Intense Hydrating Oil from the Pantene Gold Series line is perfect for that.

MN: What is your maintenance routine like and what products do you use to keep your locs looking fresh?

GC: I wash my hair once a week, again focusing on my scalp and roots. I retwist my hair once a month or every other month. I like my locs to look a bit more grown out than most prefer so I take my time to retwist. I use the Gold Series Moisture Boost Shampoo on my scalp which is great for getting rid of product build up. If you oil or moisturize your scalp on a daily basis, this product is great! I don’t go heavy with conditioner because my locs are very long and it would take days to dry which would put me at risk of mold.

MN: How was your hair before you locked it and have you found people treat you differently because of your hair or stereotype you in any way because of your locs?

GC: Right before I locked my hair I wore my hair in short tight curls, however, I generally wore weaves and constantly straightened my hair before ever wearing it curly. People definitely notice my hair before anything else on me sometimes and I kind of like it that way. I have been stereotyped a few times because of my locs but I just let it brush off of my shoulders. You can’t take negative criticism and comments too seriously if you want to progress in this life.

Or, maybe not—maybe you didn’t even expect to get married. Whether you planned on tying the knot or not, you probably didn’t plan on being overweight for your big day. You probably didn’t plan on being overweight at all—life just has a way of doing that to people. But here you are, not exactly at your goal weight, and thinking about how you want those wedding pictures to be perfect. If you’re thinking about crash dieting before your big day, honestly, you’re better off asking your makeup artist to do some contouring, getting into some spanx and choosing a dress that highlights your best features and covers up the things you’re improving on. Here is why you shouldn’t crash diet before your wedding. [caption id="attachment_620355" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Planning a wedding is already tremendously stressful when you’re not dieting. You cannot handle the stress of making sure you meal prep in addition to making it to all these meetings with caterers and florists.               [caption id="attachment_609049" align="alignleft" width="415"] Shutterstock[/caption]

You’re already cranky

You’re already cranky due to sleep deprivation and how expensive everything is. If you add a crash diet to that, you’ll be a nightmare to be around. Oh—and you kinda already are because you’re planning a wedding!             [caption id="attachment_709038" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You and boo are already bickering

Planning a wedding puts enough stress on a couple without half of that couple crash dieting. Do you want to be six pounds thinner on the big day or do you want to get along with your fiancé during the days leading up to the big day?             [caption id="attachment_220081" align="alignleft" width="375"]"DJ at a party pf" shutterstock.com[/caption]

Think of all the events

Bridal showers, bachelorette parties, engagement parties…the side parties friends throw you who couldn’t make it to your bridal party. Are you really going to tell all those people you can’t eat the treats they so lovingly made you (or bought you)?                   [caption id="attachment_615111" align="alignleft" width="420"] Corbis[/caption]

And think of the dress fittings

Your tailor needs you to stay in mostly the same shape. Oh, and your wallet needs you to, too. Because guess what? Dress fittings are not free. If you lose a ton of weight and need to be re-fitted, that’s going to cost you.               [caption id="attachment_612519" align="alignleft" width="420"] Corbis[/caption]

You could over-do it

You may end up losing too much weight and having your dress falling off on the big day. Safety pins were not a part of this ensemble plan. Neither was having tiny boobies that don’t do that low-cut justice.               [caption id="attachment_624064" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Or do it and not get the results you wanted

On the flip side, you could torture yourself and not lose the weight you wanted. And let’s be honest: if you don’t reach that goal weight, you’re going to feel all of that suffering was for nothing.           [caption id="attachment_701290" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock.com[/caption]

Your boo can’t stand to watch

It pains your partner to watch you just stare at his pizza while you push your lettuce around. And it kills him to watch you throw away the ice cream you love.             [caption id="attachment_612908" align="alignleft" width="500"] Credit: Shutterstock[/caption]

You can’t handle your booze

You will not be able to handle your booze on your wedding day. Let alone during your bachelorette! Even if you don’t throw up or pass out, you’ll still be so woozy you barely remember either of these important events.             [caption id="attachment_701334" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You’re exhausted as it is

You’re already exhausted; you don’t need to add a calorie deficit to that. You need your strength right now to juggle work and wedding planning and a social life. And exercise!               [caption id="attachment_706468" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You won’t look toned

If you crash diet, you’ll lose the lovely definition in your muscles. You may look slimmer, but you would have looked better with a little extra weight and some elegant definition in your arms.               [caption id="attachment_711846" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You’re missing out on the fun

All you’re thinking about during wedding planning is your weight. When you look back on these days, all you’ll remember is dieting. You’re missing out life’s precious moments.             [caption id="attachment_687835" align="alignleft" width="420"] Corbis[/caption]

It will throw off your hormones

Crash dieting can mess with your hormones. That means you’ll be a moody mess. Furthermore, it could mean that your period—which wasn’t meant to come on your honeymoon—will now show up just as you’re slipping into your bathing suit.           [caption id="attachment_617901" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You’ll look to other de-stressors

If comfort food usually acts as your de-stressor, you’ll end up looking to other things. Like binge shopping, drinking, obsessively redecorating your home…who knows? But you don’t want to find out.       [caption id="attachment_625897" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You’ll put it all back on immediately

You cannot sustain this diet forever. You’ll likely end up putting it all back on in the months after the wedding. But those are supposed to be some of your happiest days! And the weight will just ruin them for you.       [caption id="attachment_615832" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

You’ll feel sick when you eat your cake

Your stomach cannot handle much after you’ve been dieting. So the filet mignon, champagne, and cake at your wedding will likely leave you feeling pretty sick.               [caption id="attachment_626809" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

It puts too much pressure on you

If you do not reach your perfect goal weight by the day of your wedding, then on that day, you’ll feel like you failed. That is not something you should be feeling on your wedding day.       [caption id="attachment_614710" align="alignleft" width="467"] Corbis Images[/caption]

You won’t recognize yourself in your photos

Because it’s the only time you’ll be that thin! You will not look like yourself in your wedding photos, which will make you a little sad when you look at them in the future.                 [caption id="attachment_696992" align="alignleft" width="420"] Corbis[/caption]

You’ll gorge on your honeymoon

So much for all the zip lining and hiking to waterfalls you had planned on the honeymoon. You’ll be too busy going nuts on that hotel buffet, and then feeling sick after.             [caption id="attachment_619222" align="alignleft" width="500"] Credit: Shutterstock[/caption]

The bride is already the most beautiful woman in the room

The bride is always the most beautiful woman in the room, no matter her size. No one will notice your weight on your big day. They’ll only notice how happy you look.

Musings On Being The First Friend To Get Hitched

When my friends and I were in college, we used to play this game where we would guess who the first to get married would be, then the second, all the way through the last. Given my somewhat irrationally high standards/pickiness and my rocky track record in the love department, I was the odds-on favorite for bringing up the rear on the march down the aisle. So what a shock it was when my boyfriend got down on one knee on the second anniversary of our first date and asked me to spend the rest of our lives together. Through tears and kisses, I said yes and there started a year and a half whirlwind of planning. Getting married remains the most wonderful experience of my life. Spending hours celebrating with my dearest friends from across the country, while pledging my life and love to the greatest man in the world was the best experience I could have asked for. However, the only thing I didn’t expect was making the move to married life solo.

Though some of my friends had promising loves of their own, they’ve fizzled or slowed down since then to the point that there isn’t a marriage in sight. That’s not to say none of my friends have said “I Do.” I’ve had several male friends from college take the plunge and a select few female friends as well. But my core group, the women who I leaned on most heavily in college and in the years directly following, aren’t planning a trip to Kleinfeld’s or a “Say Yes To The Dress” appearance anytime soon. Normally being the leader isn’t something to chafe at, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish someone would hop on the boat and meet me on marriage island.

If it isn’t obvious, allow me to say that marriage changes things. Gone are the days when all you want to do is hit the town with the boo, dine at the hottest restaurants, drink at the sexiest lounges and just spending your days in bed without a care in the world. Getting married forces you to change, albeit in a good way. Suddenly your life is re-prioritized with a distinct skew toward the future. You and your partner start thinking about plans, from home improvement projects to furniture orders to, gasp, having a little person of your own. And while I can say that these changes, were not only welcome, but really, really fun in their own right, it would be a lie to say that it didn’t feel a tad bit lonely. Sure my husband, being a few years older than I, has a number of friends who have also settled into domesticity. However, there is a stark contrast between me (pre-childbirth) and them (post-childbirth). If marriage is a change, having children is a systemic shaking of your day-to-day reality. Moreover, I’m simply not as close to these wives of friends as I am the girls who saw me through hall crawls, broken hearts and wild times in college. So moving into this chapter of adulthood is something I’d love to share with them.

While I’m holding it down for the ladies at Home Depot and talking DIY projects, my girls are still living in the bliss of pre-married life. While I’m plotting out what paving stones I’d like to use in the backyard and what patio furniture makes sense, my girls are heading off to Europe and enjoying carefree weekends in the city. That’s not to say that my husband and I don’t have the opportunity to be equally as carefree, but addressing the domestic side of life together happens just as frequently. And that’s not to say that pre-married life isn’t without its troubles, frustrations or radical differences from singledom. But those changes can often pale in comparison to what you face after getting hitched and truly interweave your life (emotionally, legally and financially) with another person.

Being the first one in the group to get married has been a fun experience, allowing me to truly experience marriage in an untainted, wide-eyed way. But as I settle into year two (with having kids being something that we won’t be flirting with for a few more years), it would be nice to share my new reality with the people I love and relate to the most. To be able to relate to them just as I did when we all were firmly settled into the same life-stage just a few years ago: Young, unmarried professionals trying to find their ways through adulthood. And it wouldn’t be too terrible to have a few wild bachelorette parties under my belt before I’m out the game for nine months growing a person.

So ladies, come join me on this journey. It was the best decision I ever made, but would be even better with my besties.

What You Probably Don’t Know About Prenups

[caption id="attachment_830564" align="alignleft" width="1068"] Bigstockphoto.com/Person signing a pre nuptial marriage contract
** Note: Shallow depth of field[/caption] Whatever your stance may be on prenuptial agreements you should at least know what it is that you are for or against. Prenuptial agreements have existed for thousands of years. They didn’t always look the way they do now. Seventeenth-century dowries served as one form of prenuptial agreements; the Hebrew marriage contract called the Ketubah, protecting a woman’s financial and legal rights, is another early version of the prenuptial agreement. Clearly, cultures across the world and through history have considered these agreements valuable. And maybe you should too. Since they can, however, be the cause of some arguments in a relationship, you should know all you can about them before bringing them up to your betrothed. Here are things you may not know about prenups. [caption id="attachment_723578" align="alignleft" width="381"] Shutterstock[/caption]

They can protect your business

You may only be thinking about your personal assets when considering a prenup. Right now, so you’re so in love with your fiancé that you can’t imagine not wanting him to have what you have. But if you own a business with other people, you need to protect them with a prenup. Should you get a divorce without a prenup, your ex could own part of your business. Your partners didn’t sign up for that.       [caption id="attachment_711612" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

They can keep debts separate

If your partner enters into this marriage with a lot of debt, and you get a divorce, you could end up still helping them pay off their debt when you’re no longer even married. Unless you have a prenup that specifies you won’t be responsible for that.         [caption id="attachment_707132" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

They guard your estate

You have your place that you bought with your own money. But what about your family’s estate? And things like precious, centuries-old heirlooms? Are you willing to risk your partner getting something that affects and means something to your entire family because you didn’t get a prenup?         [caption id="attachment_704919" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

They split parenting responsibilities fairly

When you’re together, if one of you makes more money, then that person just pays for more of your children’s needs. But if you divorce, and you specifically quit your job to raise your kids because your partner asked you to, you could be left totally screwed. A prenup can ensure that your partner will carry the load of paying for your children’s life if you divorce and you’re unemployed, while he’s loaded.     [caption id="attachment_620961" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

They keep you from supporting your ex forever

Depending on how long you’re with your partner, state laws, and even other factors, you could end up supporting your ex for a very long time after a divorce. Only a prenup can protect you from that.   [caption id="attachment_702891" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

They deal with marital issues too

Prenups don’t only address finances in a divorce. They also help you define terms within the marriage. For example, how certain payments will be divided up while married (who is paying for renovations etc.)         [caption id="attachment_722656" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

They make divorce less of a headache

Most of a divorce is dividing up assets and fighting about spousal support. If you have a prenup, you already settled these things before getting married.           [caption id="attachment_704585" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

They make divorce cheaper

In case you haven’t heard, divorce is incredibly expensive. You can cut down on a lot of your lawyer’s fees if he doesn’t have to spend hours dividing up your assets.             [caption id="attachment_699584" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

If you don’t have one, the law will interfere

If you don’t have a prenup then state law might interfere and determine who gets what. The only way to protect yourself from that is with a prenup, or some very stressful days in court.           [caption id="attachment_619354" align="alignleft" width="419"] Shutterstock[/caption]

This is what a prenup costs

Between $1,200 and $2,400. If you split it, it’s not that much between you and your fiancé. And you can’t expect one another to kindly split divorce fees later, so you may as well split this cost while you’re getting along.           [caption id="attachment_702843" align="alignleft" width="419"] Shutterstock[/caption]

You do need a lawyer

You cannot write up your own prenup and have your partner sign it. In order for a prenup to be valid, a lawyer must create it.               [caption id="attachment_717513" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

You may need separate lawyers

Depending on your state’s law, you and your partner may need to have separate lawyers. That can be better, though, because they can hash things out while you and your fiancé go to lunch.           [caption id="attachment_616073" align="alignleft" width="420"]kids summer outside eating food snack siblings boy girl Shutterstock[/caption]

They will not cover child custody

Child custody is one thing that cannot be covered in a prenup. For better or for worse. You’ll have to battle that one out in the event of a divorce.           [caption id="attachment_717697" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

You can add just about anything

Aside from child custody, almost nothing is off limits in a prenup. You can add a fee for gaining weight, for cheating, for changing hair color…             [caption id="attachment_705351" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

They can have expiration dates

You can stipulate in your prenup that after X amount of years of marriage, it is no longer valid. Then you don’t even need to worry about drawing up documents to dissolve it later.

Meet The Newly-Crowned Miss USA: Natural-Hair Wearing Scientist And Miss D.C., Kára McCullough

This past weekend, the Miss USA 2017 pageant took place and a new queen of pageantry was crowned. Chocolate City took home the top prize yet again with 25-year-old Miss D.C. Kára McCullough winning the competition on Sunday night. She beat out first and second runner-up Chhavi Verg of New Jersey and Meridith Gould of Minnesota. So what’s her story?

Miss USA Kara McCullough

McCullough is a nuclear scientist at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and before being given that opportunity, she graduated from South Carolina State University with a degree in chemistry (with a concentration on radiochemistry). The beauty wore her natural curls during the competition, which she was initially nervous about.

“When I choose to wear my hair curly, I was afraid,” McCullough told Refinery29. “I didn’t know if people were going to accept it.”

She continued, “I decided to embrace what makes me feel comfortable and what makes me feel the best and brightest on stage, but also embrace what other people can relate to. That typical, traditional sleek hair with a big tease, not to say it’s gone out the window, but it’s transitioning a lot.”

Of course, her choice to forgo the usual long hair or big bouffants for natural hair was received warmly. However, as last night’s show went on, that ended up being one of the few things received warmly by those who were watching the competition at home yesterday. Despite her being a great role model in terms of embracing her hair, being a successful Black woman in the STEM field, and starting an outreach program called Science Exploration for Kids to help students from grades six to 11, her stance on healthcare and feminism weren’t a hit with viewers.

 Kara McCullough Miss USA

When asked during the competition if she felt that affordable healthcare is a privilege or a right to everyone, she responded with this:

“I’m definitely going to say it’s a privilege. As a government employee, I am granted health care. And I see firsthand that for one to have health care, you need to have jobs. So therefore, we need to continue to cultivate this environment that we’re given the opportunities to have health care as well as jobs to all the American citizens worldwide.”

As for feminism, according to PEOPLE, McCullough said this when asked what she considered feminism and if she identifies as a feminist:

“So as a woman scientist in the government, I’d like to lately transpose the word ‘feminism’ to ‘equalism.’ I don’t really want to consider myself — try not to consider myself like this die-hard, you know, like, ‘Oh, I don’t really care about men.’ But one thing I’m going to say, though, is women, we are just as equal as men when it comes to opportunity in the workplace.”

Yeeeeeeah, that didn’t go over so well.

McCullough will have until next year to figure out whether or not those are the stances she wants to keep on such issues, because that’s when she will represent the USA on an even bigger stage — at the Miss Universe pageant.

Black Students Punished At Massachusetts Charter School Over Box Braids

When schools make their students wear uniforms, one of the reasons they do so is in order to unify students, making attire less of a distraction. But is uniformity not only necessary when it comes to uniforms, but also when it comes to hairstyles?

That’s what the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts seems to think. They’ve punished students, including twins Deanna and Mya Cook, for wearing box braids. The 15-year-olds have been hit with multiple detentions and even removed from everything from prom to the track team over them. Their parents worried that the detentions would lead to suspension, so not only did they start keeping the girls from serving them, but they also decided to protest the school’s stance on braids in the dress code, which they deem racist.

“They teach them at a very high academic level and I appreciate that, and that’s why they go to the school,” the girls’ mother, Colleen Cook, said to the Boston Globe. “But, unfortunately, they don’t have any sensitivity to diversity at all.”

Mystic Valley Regional Charter School believes that braids throw a wrench in their attempts to focus “on what unites our students.” They believe such styles could create negative conversations about social class, in particular, at what means students live.

“Our policies, including those governing student appearance and attire, foster a culture that emphasizes education rather than style, fashion, or materialism,” the school’s statement reads. “Our policy on hair extensions, which tend to be very expensive, is consistent with, and a part of, the educational environment that we believe is so important to our students’ success.”

For the record, the school’s student handbook prohibits hair extensions in general, along with hair coloring, makeup, tattoos, and even nail polish.

But Colleen Cook said that the stance on extensions, particularly braided ones, which were cracked down on more than ever after spring break, is an attack on students of color. Cook said the braids give her daughters pride. “They want to partake in their culture.”

And if being banned from prom and extracurricular sports wasn’t enough, another student was even suspended. Such extreme measures have caused Cook to reach out to the Anti-Defamation League, the attorney general’s office as well as the NAACP. However, according to Boston’s local CBS affiliate, Mystic Valley has refused to meet with the Anti-Defamation League. But state education officials are set to discuss this contentious policy with the school’s officials. Also, the ACLU of Massachusetts has filed a complaint against the school:

In a statement, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice called out the policy, and even requested records to see the number of students of color impacted by this particular dress code.

“Denying young black women their opportunity to express their cultural identity will not make the school safer, more orderly, or less ‘distracting,'” the committee said.

Classic Appetizers Made Healthy

[caption id="attachment_830640" align="alignleft" width="1068"] Bigstockphoto.com/7 Layer Bean Dip shot made in studio
** Note: Shallow depth of field[/caption] It’s that time of year when everybody is firing up their barbecues, heating up their pools and opening up their backyard for parties and cookouts every weekend. Part of the reason people feel happier in the summer is because summer is a social time! But socializing usually means eating—overeating, to be precise. You’re mingling, you’re drinking, and before you know it, you’ve had half a family-size bag of chips with bean dip all to yourself and the burgers aren’t even ready yet. If you live for the appetizers at parties, then you’ll just have to learn how to make them healthy, so you don’t end the summer season looking like the pigs in the blankets you gorged on. Here are classic appetizers, healthified (yes, we coined a new term). So you won’t feel like you’re missing out. [caption id="attachment_830641" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphotos.com/Child hands washing fresh vegetables for a healthy salad - the red bell pepper under the water stream of the kitchen sink, shallow depth[/caption]

Veggie chip nachos

The toppings on nachos aren’t generally that bad (unless you’re a sour cream fiend), but the chips on the bottom bring in the empty calories. Try using little baked bell pepper triangles in place of the chips. You can also use zucchini slices, sweet potato slices…any veggie you like.               [caption id="attachment_830642" align="alignleft" width="563"] Bigstockphoto.com/Traditional latinamerican mexican sauce guacamole in clay bowl and avocado sandwiches on dark background. Top view[/caption]

Veggie-loaded guacamole

Avocado is great for you—in moderation. Help moderate yourself by using half the avocados you normally would, and instead, blending in finely chopped up cucumbers to add volume. You can also blend in smashed up white beans to add creaminess and fiber.               [caption id="attachment_830643" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Chicken or turkey and vegetables cooked spicy skewers put on a board ready to be served as summer party meal view from above space for a text[/caption]

Skewers

Skewers can be healthy or very unhealthy, depending on what you put on them. Skip the ones loaded with steak and instead try chicken, bell peppers, and zucchini, or feta cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers for a Greek salad-style skewer.               [caption id="attachment_830644" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/unrecognizable person holding a paper bag of freash geen beans[/caption]

String bean “fries”

If you haven’t had panko-covered baked string bean “fries” with sriracha, you haven’t lived. You won’t miss regular potato French fries after having these.               [caption id="attachment_830645" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Tasty pizza with cheese and pepperoni slices, closeup[/caption]

Pepperoni cups

Instead of pizza bagel bites or mini personal pizzas, try this: bake large pepperonis until they curl up into little cup shapes. Fill these with low-fat mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. Then you can skip the carbs of the crust.               [caption id="attachment_717494" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Buffalo cauliflower

If you take your favorite buffalo sauce that you’d typically put on chicken wings and toss it over baked cauliflower, you’ll be in heaven. And you’ll get plenty of vegetable points, without consuming too many calories.             [caption id="attachment_830646" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Sope queso with chips and chilli on a wooden background[/caption]

Vegan queso dip

Queso dip is hard to stop eating once you start. And that’s a problem for your waistline. Instead of using traditional queso cheese, purchase cashew-based nacho cheese from your local health food store, and mix in the other usual ingredients like scallions and jalapeno peppers. It’s lower in calories and adds protein points.             [caption id="attachment_830647" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Potato chips and bowl of onion dip isolated on white background.[/caption]

Onion dip

Typically made with sour cream, this sweet and savory dip can bring in a lot of calories. Try making it with Greek yogurt, instead, to add protein points and substantially cut back on the calories.               [caption id="attachment_830648" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/A tomato stuffed with Spinach Artichoke Parmesan Dip on a party plate of crackers[/caption]

Artichoke dip

This recipe usually calls for mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, and artichokes. It’s another one that could benefit from swapping in Greek yogurt for your creamy base. Blend in some steamed kale for more fiber, too.               [caption id="attachment_716700" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Butterbean dip

Traditional bean dip uses a whole lot of cream cheese and refried beans. You can make an equally tasty dip using butter beans, lemon juice, garlic, paprika, and cumin.               [caption id="attachment_830649" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/tow of three mini turkey burger sliders with brioche buns[/caption]

Sliders on sweet potato buns

Sliders seem so harmless with their teeny, tiny buns. But that’s why you end up eating six of them, and having more bread than you would have on one normal-size burger. Instead of mini buns, use thick slices of baked sweet potatoes, gently fried in olive oil to give them texture.           [caption id="attachment_697875" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Sweet potato skins

Sweet potatoes come to the rescue again! Loaded with vitamins and fiber, this orange potato provides a healthy base for your potato skins. Then fill those up with black beans, broccoli, and a little cheddar cheese.               [caption id="attachment_830650" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Pile of Deep fried battered onion rings[/caption]

Bran onion rings

The only real problem with onion rings is that batter. So make your own, healthy variety with bran! Once you’ve baked them and dipped them in ketchup and barbecue sauce, you won’t notice that your batter is healthy.             [caption id="attachment_830651" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Corn Dog in the Sky with Mustard![/caption]

Corn dog bites

The traditional corn dog has few redeeming qualities. It’s made with mystery meat and too much bread. Try corn dog bites, made with gluten free flour (and minimize the bread in these) and turkey dogs.             [caption id="attachment_830652" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/jalapeno poppers[/caption]

Lighter jalapeno poppers

The jalapenos are good for you; what’s in them isn’t. Make a healthy variety with Greek yogurt, low-fat cream cheese, and mayo. You won’t miss the cream cheese.                 [caption id="attachment_830653" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Baked mushrooms stuffed with spinach and cheese[/caption]

Green-stuffed mushrooms

Mushrooms go from healthy to unhealthy when you stuff them with cream cheese. So stuff yours with pesto, spinach, and a little goat cheese. They’re far tastier than the original kind.               [caption id="attachment_830654" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Homemade Mexican 7 Layer Dip with Beans Sour Cream and Guacamole[/caption]

Seven-layer dip cups

It’s easy to lose track of how much seven-layer dip you have. So make yours in small tortilla cups. Leave out or at least go easy on the sour cream and cheddar cheese. And instead of refried beans, use whole black beans that you hand-mash.               [caption id="attachment_830655" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Homemade Sweet Potato Tater Tots with Ketchup[/caption]

Sweet potato tots

Sweet potato tots are truly tastier than white potato tots, and they boast more nutrition. Rather than frying these, just bake them, sprinkle with some olive oil and sea salt.               [caption id="attachment_830656" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/A plate of mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce.[/caption]

Baked mozzarella sticks

Mozzarella sticks taste just as good baked—if not better. Make yours with panko breadcrumbs or bran (like you did with those onion rings) for a healthier batter.               [caption id="attachment_830657" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphotos.com/Homemade Mexican Beef Taquitos with Cilantro and Salsa[/caption]

Baked taquitos

Taquitos are another appetizer that don’t need to go in the fryer. Stuff yours to the brim with chicken so people fill up on the protein, and don’t need to go back for too many.
