https://www.instagram.com/p/BPEH0WPhRgm/?taken-by=amandlastenberg&hl=en We told you last week that actress and activist Amandla Stenberg showed off a new short cut that she sported for a film called Where Hands Touch with director Amma Asante. For Stenberg, despite embracing a large head full of curls since stepping into the spotlight years ago, the drastic hair change was freeing:
I just finished working on a film called Where Hands Touch directed by the incredible @iammaasante. The story is about the experience of biracial children growing up in Nazi Germany. I shaved my head for the role. Feels really good. I feel so aerodynamic now. I've achieved ultimate speed. :)
The actress has since dyed the hair blond and rocked the look with power. The confidence exhibited, as well as the freedom, makes us want to feel the breeze on our scalp, too. But Stenberg is not the only one who looks fierce with a fade. Check out everyday women who make us want to chop our hair off. Work, ladies!

Michael Eric Dyson’s Appearance On “The Breakfast Club” Was Inspiring, Enlightening & A Celebration of Black Women

If you've ever heard Michael Eric Dyson speak, you know it's intense. He speaks quickly so you have to listen fast. But it's always well worth it because every time I've heard MED speak, whether it be at a University, a church or even a morning radio show, he tells the gospel truth, making you laugh, grunt in agreement and think critically not only about the world as it exists today, but what you could do to make it better.
On Black celebs meeting with Trump
Before Charlamagne could introduce him good enough, Dr. Dyson was ready to start talking about the Black celebrities who have met with Donald Trump, in the days leading up to his inauguration. He noted that all of the Black folks he’s taken pictures with are comedians, football players and rappers-many people who “have not been routinely engaging in social justice.” He mentioned that Donald Trump is really ready to engage with the Congressional Black Caucus or actual activists who would challenge some of his comments, policies etc. He said it was very clear that Donald Trump was trying very hard to “avoid serious Black heat.”

Lauren Lake is real deal Renaissance woman who continuously proves that Black women are magical. Author of Girl! Let Me Tell You..., she has taught women how to unapologetically strive for their goals in every area of life. The co-founder of the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN) was even a regular expert on the Ricki Lake Show. Lake also served as host and designer on HGTV’s Spice Up My Kitchen and was the HGTV Showdown Champion for two consecutive years. And she's a former professional singer, songwriter and producer who sang background for multi-platinum artists including Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, P. Diddy, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Thought that was a mouthful? She is now one of the celebrity judges on Centric's new reality competition Queen Boss and is taking Paternity Court to higher heights. Check out what she told us about her empire expansion in 2017. [caption id="attachment_783054" align="aligncenter" width="1068"] Instagram feat[/caption] MadameNoire (MN): What were your thoughts when you got the call to do Queen Boss? Lauren Lake (LL): I was so excited about this project because Black women entrepreneurs are the fastest growing business owners right now. Historically, we have always been creative people. We take care of households, we raise children and we run our families like small companies. We also have invented so many things and I do not think enough light has been shed on contributions African-American women have brought to society. So this show is important because it is about empowering women entrepreneurs and giving them encouragement, determination, and even that tough love that we need. We need tough love and criticism so that we can grow... I was so excited about it. I really feel honored to be a part of the project. MN: What makes Queen Boss stand out from Shark Tank? LL: It definitely concentrates on women of color. It highlights and gives them an avenue we really have not seen in business competition programming. We as the judges are very particular about our brand of inspiration. It's not just about the business of it all, but also about connecting on a spiritual level and helping these women grow and challenging them. We're giving them the tools needed to truly pitch and grow their product. So that's what's different about it--the spirit and soul of the project. As judges, we have been in that position of growing a business and brand as women of color. So I think that connects the judges and contestants, and viewers will feel that connection. MN: It sounds like each episode will inspire people and push them to move forward with business ideas they've had for years. How do you think this show will impact viewers? LL: I think they are going to understand the limitless possibilities for their lives. Many of these women started out on different professional paths. They used their creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination to come up with a product. What I also say in my personal brand when I am speaking at events is there's an empire inside all of us! It's special to see these women tap into their genius and purpose. It's the story behind the glory of it all. We get the first-hand story of why these businesses were birthed. We get to see how they felt when the product doesn't meet full potential and how they continue through disappointment. Ultimately, with our innate God-given gifts we can prevail through adversity because it's ours, and ours alone. This show will speak to the possibility inside other women and bring their empires to life. MN: If anyone knows about bringing an empire to life it would have to be you! You wear many hats with your skillset in various industries and are able to monetize them. LL: Thank you! As women we multi-task all day long, but in our professional lives we're expected to be one thing. No! People would say to me 'Are you going to be a jack of all trades, or a master of nothing?' And I would say I'm going to be a Jill of whatever I choose to master. Fastfoward, these same people have watched me build my personal empire by using my various, multifaceted gifts and talents to create my brand, Limitless Living. I live outside of the lines and I don't allow anyone to place me inside of a box. The creators of the show thought my life and brand as a great example for women. MN: Can you tell us what's going on in Paternity Court this year? LL: Season 4 is airing right now. We are so proud of this season. We have been able to send people back to school, provide scholarships, parenting classes, and supply young mothers with much-needed supplies and resources for their babies. We are just so excited about how many people watch the show. MN: Why do you think people would rather go on television to handle paternity issues instead of settling the matter in private? LL: Many times a litigant will say to me how they've watched the show and that is why they feel comfortable coming to me. They feel encouraged and that their secrets will not be exploited. We also celebrated our 500th episode last year. It's an exciting benchmark along with our Emmy nomination, but it's more about the hundreds of families we've been able to serve through this vehicle. MN: What else can we expect from the Lauren Lake brand? LL: I am so excited to have my first Limitless Living Conference in October. I have traveled the world for the last 10 years talking about what it means to live life limitlessly—stepping out of your comfort zone and living life to the fullest. Now we're going to have a conference where people will get the inspiration and motivation that they need. You can stay posted at laurenlake.com.

As we tuned in President Obama deliver his farewell address and we read Donald Trump’s never ending tweets and watched the confirmation hearings forTrump’s cabinet picks, many of us can’t help but feel a sense of panic and uncertainty. What is really going on with this country and what is going to happen now? In times like these, art that reflects both our feelings and our humanity is necessary. So, it was only right that Ebony tapped artist Kadir Nelson for their February cover. In times like these, art that reflects both our feelings and our humanity is necessary. So, it was only right that Ebony tapped artist Kadir Nelson for their February cover. Ebony released a statement saying that the publication “has a renewed focus on survival, unity and ensuring that Black communities live up to the promises that our ancestors left behind.” Ebony’s editor-in-chief and Senior Vice President of Digital Editorial said, “Now is an ideal time to strategize about how best to politically, economically and socially harness said power and influence for the betterment of the Black community. We have endured much worse, and we never gave up or lost ourselves. From bus boycotts to Black Lives Matter, we just need to know what to do and to whom to do it.” The annual Black History/Black Future issue consults experts on ways in which the community can breathe and gain control of its destiny during the Trump era. There’s a spotlight on activism in the NFL and one on Raoul Peck’s documentary on James Baldwin I Am Not Your Negro.” There’s also an in-depth piece on the historical significance of collard greens in the Black community and its cultural appropriation. Bishop Jakes has a message for families and a new multimedia series called “In Our Cities” highlights all of the positive things going on in Black neighborhoods across the country, starting with Chicago. The Black History/Black Future issue is on newsstands now. Veronica Wells is the culture editor at MadameNoire.com. Is Dr. Steve Perry Right In His Support Of Donald Trump’s Sec. Of Education Nominee?

0

Betsy DeVos, President Trump's pick for the Secretary of Education, is certainly having a tough confirmation hearing. First, it was this dragging by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld6k2b-AEfU Then it was this dragging by Minnesota Sen. Al Franken. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF8wEH2ixak And finally this straight-up, no-chaser dragging by Democrat purists and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfXLQnBEAbc At the heart of everyone's need to drag Mrs. DeVos is the belief that once confirmed, millionaire-education reformist will gut the DOE's public school system and replace it with charter schools and vouchers. It's a valid concern considering her history and relationship to for-profit educational groups. And it's a position that some progressive leaders and civil right organizations are against. This includes the NAACP, which recently ratified its organizational resolution to include a moratorium on new charter schools until concerned about high suspension rates for children of color and “cherry-picking” high achieving students could be resolved. But in spite of all the pushback, it seems that DeVos has at least one public supporter in the community: Dr. Steve Perry. That's right, the prominent Black educator and founder of the highly acclaimed Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Connecticut, which is known for graduating 100 percent of its all-Black male academy into college for almost 10 consecutive years, is supporting DeVos' nomination. More specifically in a series of tweets, he writes: https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821733450860347393 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821737849389281280 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821738297185751040 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821738823151403008 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821739490431664128 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821740361051766784 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821740784986759168 https://twitter.com/DrStevePerry/status/821741427109588994 Dr. Perry, who is also working with Sean “Puffy” Combs on a charter school in Harlem, is no stranger to taking controversial positions on education. An avid promoter of charter schools, Dr. Perry has been criticized for his aggressive anti-teachers union stance. And last year, the educator was accused of perpetuating “respectability politics” for suggesting dreadlocks and afros did not promote an “aesthetics to success.” Nevertheless, the issue of vouchers and charter schools have always caused division within education circles. This is particularly true for Black communities where families are desperate for good alternatives to what are essentially failing public schools. In fact, some of the NAACP's biggest detractors were Black educational and civic leaders, who drafted a letter requesting the civil rights group reconsider its moratorium for the sake of the 700,000 Black families choosing to send their children to charter public schools and the tens of thousands more who are still on waiting lists.” As the leaders told the NAACP:
“There is a reason for enthusiastic support in the Black community: parents see for themselves how their children are flourishing in charter schools. According to the most thorough and respected study of charter school results, conducted by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University, Black students learn more when they attend charter schools. Black students in charter schools gained the equivalent of 14 extra days of learning in reading and 14 extra days of learning in math per year compared with their Black peers in traditional district schools. For low-income Black students attending charter schools, the learning gains were even more dramatic—the equivalent of 29 extra learning days in reading and 36 extra learning days in math. Because of these results, a substantial number of Black parents want to have the option of enrolling their children in high-quality charter schools. For many urban Black families, charter schools are making it possible to do what affluent families have long been able to do: rescue their children from failing schools. The NAACP should not support efforts to take that option away from low-income and working-class Black families. A blanket moratorium on charter schools would limit Black students’ access to some of the best schools in America and deny Black parents the opportunity to make decisions about what’s best for their children. ”
The letter was signed by over 160 educators, civic leaders and clergy including Dr. Perry. Even President Obama is a supporter of charter schools. In 2012, he referred to them as "incubators of innovation" during a proclamation commemorating National Charter School Week. His Race to the Top competitive grant plan included a provision to expand “support for high-performing public charter schools,” particularly in low-income and minority communities. And during his 8 years has increased charter school funding by also $125.2 million, which actually fell short of his original promise to "double funding for the Federal Charter School Program to support the creation of more successful charter schools." Point is, many of our folks are supporters of school choice. And as bad and seemingly unqualified as DeVos is, Dr. Perry might have a point about the opportunities her appointment might create for our folks to build the kind of quality schools we say we want to see more of in our communities. Granted, I don't know about cheerleading her appointment. I don't even think charter schools, as they are being implemented now, are our final solution (Like, what's the point of taking your kids our of public school if you're going to put them in the Dr. Umar Johnson School of Imaginary Friends). At the same time, there is nothing wrong with planning for the inevitable. And for our sake – and the sake our of children – I hope there are some Black educators working on school plans of our own. As it should be clear as day, they have one. Charing Ball is a writer, cultural critic and smarty-pants Black feminist from Philadelphia. Caption This: What’s Michelle Obama Thinking At The Inauguration Right Now?

If there's one thing social media is good for it's taking tragedy and turning it into tears of laughter. No one -- except Donald Trump-- can stand the site of our first Black President and First Lady leaving the white house today, and from the looks of things, Michelle Obama isn't too happy about either. Twitter and Instagram are lit with photos of FLOTUS half-grinning and bearing it when it comes to welcoming Donald and Melania Trump into the place she dubbed "the people's house," and by the time she got to the inauguration... child, it looked like she was over it. We are tickled with laughter watching her expressions, which pretty much mimic all of ours from home. Caption these screenshots of Michelle during the inauguration and tell us what she's thinking. https://www.instagram.com/p/BPfqViQltB_/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BPfq5JagJ5P/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BPfqvIggLMw/ Just in case you thought these were just coincidentally awkward angles, here's video for you. Yara Shahidi To Star In New “Black-ish” Spin Off

The hits may keep coming for ABC. Reportedly, the network is in talks to expand their roster of shows with a “Black-ish” spinoff, starring Yara Shahidi, who plays Zoey Johnson on the current series. According to Deadline, ABC is working with creator and executive producer Kenya Barris and ABC Studios on a project that would focus on Zoey’s transition into college. The new series is set to be introduced as a backdoor pilot episode on “Black-ish” this spring. Still, sources stress that they are still in the very early stages and that no scripts have been written or deals made. The new pilot is supposed to be a collaboration between Barris and Larry Wilmore, the former “Black-ish” showrunner, who left the series to work on his Comedy Central late-night show. After he left his show, Wilmore returned to ABC. According to the Deadline source, Wilmore already had an idea for a college comedy and they decided to combine it with a Zoey/ “Black-ish” spinoff. We can’t help but notice the similarities between this, "The Cosby Show" and "A Different World." If it should come to fruition, it would be Barris’ second new comedy in the works for ABC, during the upcoming season. He also co-wrote and executive produced “Libby and Malcolm,” with Vijal Patel, starring Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance. Kenya, with the success of “Black-ish” and Larry with his contributions to "Black-ish" and “Insecure,” it would seem that these two have the Midas touch. We’re sure whatever they come up with, will be worth watching. Veronica Wells is the culture editor at MadameNoire.com. There is certainly enough talk about it from your partner and his male friends, and your male friends, pretty much any time the subject of adult movies come up. Many of the positions, grooming trends and toys that are common place in most couple’s sex lives today originated from these flicks, so there is no shame in wanting to know what the pros are up to. Of course, whenever it comes to doing anything…back there…we can all get a little squeamish. We sit on that area, after all, so if anything goes on, life can be very uncomfortable. Since not a lot of your friends have experienced it, and the few who have won’t talk about it, here is the truth about anal bleaching. [caption id="attachment_627199" align="aligncenter" width="426"] Corbis[/caption]
There is a purpose
For obvious reasons, the area around the anus can become discolored over time. For some people, this area becomes extremely dark. That’s where anal bleaching comes in. It’s not all about making that area extremely light, but rather about returning it to a more neutral color.

Commentator Dropped By ESPN Following Venus Williams “Gorilla” Controversy

He could have meant guerrilla instead of gorilla, but ESPN commentator Doug Adler's poor choice of words are getting him sent home. "You see Venus move in and put the gorilla effect on. Charging." Twitter users immediately noticed and called out the comments. There were even calls by offended parties for Adler to be fired. Adler asserts that he meant "guerrilla," even though ESPN stated that it's impossible to truly know what he meant considering both "guerrilla" and "gorilla" are pronounced exactly the same. He acknowledged on Thursday evening that he should have chosen a better description for the tennis legend's performance and strategy, and he "simply and inadvertently chose the wrong word to describe her play." Adler has since been removed from calling matches for the current Australian Open tournament, losing his opportunity before the third round. Guess he will have some time to sit with a thesaurus and find a more suitable and less controversial word. "During an Australian Open stream on ESPN3, Doug Adler should have been more careful in his word selection," ESPN's statement said. "He apologized and we have removed him from his remaining assignments." Williams has focused on getting prepared for her next match, which was today. She outpaced Ying-Ying Duan of China in 58 minutes. During a post-match press conference, Williams was asked about the comments. She said she doesn't focus on such negativity because there are more than enough positive things happening in her life and career. "It’s been a wonderful, wonderful career for me, full of positives," she said. "That’s what I focus on. I mean, what else can I do? It’s a beautiful life. That’s how I feel about every single thing. It’s just that simple, honestly." She continued, "I pay attention and address situations that are noteworthy. That’s been my past record clearly." Image via Instagram

10 Shirts You’re Going To Need To Get Through The Next Four Years

And while there are sure to be more things to poke fun at over the next 1,460 days, there will no doubt be many more attacks on our civil liberties, reproductive rights, and the basic premise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness promised to us in our nation's Declaration of Independence. As such, we're going to have to constantly remind ourselves to keep hope alive, like Barack Obama would want us to, and to keep fighting for said civil liberties. And we can't think of a better reminder than saying it with our chest -- as in wearing a tee-shirt, crew neck, sweatshirt or hoodie that reminds -- and onlookers -- we are a force to be reckoned with and we shall overcome. Here are 10 shirts to carry you through the next four years.

Spike Lee Introduces New Nola Darling To Original For Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It Series

It's been 30 years since Spike Lee's first feature-length film, She's Gotta Have It, was released. With its sexually-liberated lead character, her iconic taper haircut and Spike's innovative way of capturing Brooklyn (which would influence a number of artists and musicians to move in), the film was influential in many ways. https://www.instagram.com/p/BM4AGaqgk6F/?tagged=tracycamillajohns&hl=en And while a majority of the cast has only taken on a handful of acting roles since they shot the film in '86, Tracy Camilla Johns, who played protagonist Nola Darling, seemingly stepped out of the public eye. But she's back -- at least she's back at Spike Lee's side. The director has a deal with Netflix to both executive produce and direct a series based on the project. He shared an image earlier today of his new Nola Darling, who will be played by actress DeWanda Wise, standing alongside Johns. It's safe to say yet again that Black don't crack: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPfq9q5lflZ/?hl=en Both women are beauties (and actually bear a small resemblance)! As for Wise, aside from starring as Darling, she also stars in the upcoming Fox drama Shots Fired with Sanaa Lathan and Helen Hunt. She also appears in the second season of Underground alongside her husband, actor and producer Alano Miller, who plays overseer Cato. She's just as excited about her leading role as we are about watching it: https://www.instagram.com/p/BLjbZjSlcUn/?taken-by=officialspikelee&hl=en https://www.instagram.com/p/BM9V2gDgMk4/?taken-by=dewandawise&hl=en https://www.instagram.com/p/BPX9l2-gBDk/?tagged=shesgottahaveit&hl=en https://www.instagram.com/p/BO2UUTsAqfp/?taken-by=dewandawise&hl=en It's unclear when the series will make its premiere on Netflix, but the company ordered 10 episodes running at 30 minutes. Lee had this to say in a statement about the project after news of Netflix jumping on board spread:
SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT Has A Very Special Place In My Heart. We Shot This Film In 12 Days (2 Six Day Weeks) Way Back In The Back Back Of The Hot Summer Of 1985 For A Mere Total of $175,000. Funds That We Begged, Borrowed and Whatnot To Get That Money. This Is The 1st Official Spike Lee Feature Film Joint And Everything That We Have Been Blessed With In This Tough Business Of Film All Have Been Due To SGHI. Now With The Passing (August 8th) Of The 30th Anniversary, It’s A Gift That Keeps On Giving. We Are Getting An Opportunity To Revisit These Memorable Characters Who Will Still Be Relevant And Avant Garde 3 Decades Later. With All That Said It Was My Wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, Producer In Her Own Right,Who Had The Vision To Take My Film From The Big Screen And Turn It Into An Episodic Series. It Had Not Occurred To Me At All. Tonya Saw It Plain As Day. I Didn’t. We Are Hyped That NETFLIX Is Onboard With This Vision As Nola Darling, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet And Greer Childs DO DA DAMN THANG Now, Today In Da Republic Of Brooklyn, New York.”
Can. Not. Wait. Images via Instagram

All Of The Gross Things That Have Happened Since Donald Trump Took Office

As of 12:00 p.m. today, Donald J. Trump is president of the United States. I find myself fluctuating between complete disbelief, bitter laughter and a bit of old-fashioned ire. I told myself that after I watched the Obamas leave, I was going to avoid the inauguration coverage to the best of my abilities. But I work on the internet and I’m nosey, so it’s proven to be a very difficult task. And being on the internet, it’s hard to avoid all of the f*ck sh*t that has already transpired since President Trump was sworn into office.

Recently announced, Campbell is one of the new faces of Givenchy's latest jean collection, fronting the campaign alongside Justin Levy. Featuring risque black and white photos, Campbell sits topless on Levy's shoulder, rocking nothing but a pair of jeans in the campaign styled by Carine Roitfeld and shot by renowned fashion photography duo Luigi and Iango. To sprinkle a bit of taste and class on the campaign, there's a black bar covering her chest. [caption id="attachment_783204" align="aligncenter" width="750"] Photo Credit: Givenchy/ Luigi and Lango[/caption] In another shot, the undeniably ageless supermodel strikes a fierce pose in a slim-fitting turtleneck and a pair of the brand's black jeans, which feature a white star on the backside. Of course, the news didn't go over well with many of her fans jumping ship and even Questlove of The Roots offered to pay her not to sing. While many hoped that she would change her mind by Friday (Jan. 20), she didn't. Instead, she took the stage at the Liberty Ball alongside gospel artist Travis Greene. Backed by a choir, the two sang Greene’s gospel hit “Intentional." Although they sounded great, Twitter took no time to drag Michele, who essentially said she was "willing to be a bridge" during our current time of change. But the most interesting tidbit of information from the inner workings of the entire deal revealed that the rumored $750,000 she was set to make actually was much less. On Friday, The New York Daily News confirmed that her payout was actually $250,000. Sources told the site that when "Michele reached her agreement with Team Trump last week, she'd committed to doing an "R&B set" after plans to do an ensemble gospel number fell through because other singers being pursued by event organizers wouldn't take the gig." Looks like they were able to pull it together at the last minute, but was it really worth it?

Having landed two internships in the film and TV industry, working on the set of Lena Dunham's HBO series Girls and Halle Berry CBS series Extant, the eldest Obama daughter will soon start work as an intern for Hollywood superproducer Harvey Weinstein, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Malia's internship will begin after the Obama family's vacation in Palms Springs, California after the inauguration activities on Jan. 20.
Interesting enough, Weinstein is a donor to Democratic causes and candidates, including former President Obama. He even held several fundraisers for Obama over the years and worked on the Hillary Clinton campaign this past cycle. While the details on which Weinstein Co. department Malia will work in is still unknown, sources say it may be in marketing or development.

Congrats, Malia!

Thankfully, there's a new product targeted directly at avid red wine sippers that will leave your smile bright. That's where the Wino Sipper comes in. The genius invention is a five-ounce wine glass that features a built-in glass straw so you can sip without a drop of wine actually touching your teeth. Sounds equally chic and smart, right? Not to mention, the Wino Sipper is budget-friendly, clocking in at just $24 each for a set of two from Oenophilia. And while we've never actually gotten our hands on one of the glasses just yet, we've watched the Wino Sipper-produced video below explaining just how great this work of art really is.

You know, those plastic things that go on your head to protect your hair while you scrub your body clean. But "protect" can be used quite loosely. Ever realized once you stepped out of the shower that a bunch of loose strands were drenched and your blow out was ruined? Probably.

introducing THE VIBE

A photo posted by SHHHOWERCAP (@shhhowercap) on Nov 14, 2016 at 8:44am PST

Well, there's a new shower cap on the market that's reinvented the form and function of the good ol' cap your aunts and grandma used back in the day.
