Yara Shahidi Shares Details About Her ‘Black-ish’ Spinoff

While Yara Shahidi is sending off college recommendation letters from the likes of Michelle Obama, the Black-ish actresses character Zoey Johnson is also en route to leaving the nest and experiencing the world as a young woman.

At the top of the year, it was announced that Shahidi would front a Black-ish spinoff created by the executive producer Kenya Barris and ABC Studios, focusing on Zoey’s college experience.

In a recent interview with AOL’s Build Series, the 17-year-old actress revealed what viewers at home can expect from the pending ABC series.

“While Zoey has taken so many steps as a young woman and young woman of color to become an independent and to become an activist and to become socially aware, I think this is the most growth we’ve seen from her just in that she has lived under the guise of a family household,” she said.

Shahidi went on to explain how moving to a new environment will force her character out of her comfort zone, like most college students experience in some way.

“While she is a young black girl in this political climate, she does have the privilege of being socioeconomically well-off, in which case college, you don’t see that,” she explained. “College, at least for Zoey, is no longer a factor she can hide under or hide with. And so we’re no longer talking about race but the intersection of race and gender and sexuality and the intersection of race and politics, and she finally has to kind of deal on her own.”

It’s official: wedding season is upon us .

On Saturday (March 8) Omarosa Manigault married John Allen Newman during a small ceremony at Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. Interestingly enough, their wedding was supposed to happen last month in Florida but was postponed due to alleged death threats.

The White House senior staffer shared the special news via Twitter, posting a photo of her and her new husband happily taking their final walk down the aisle hand-in-hand. “Just Married! #HappilyEverNewman,” she captioned the flick.

According to PEOPLE, earlier in the week on Wednesday, Omarosa celebrated a bridal going away party with her White House co-workers like Kellyanne Conway.

Politico also shared that Trump himself along with several of his senior White House staff members were not expected to attend as they are spending the weekend at the President’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, according to the outlet.

Oh shit : part 1

A post shared by Zoë Kravitz (@zoeisabellakravitz) on

Say goodbye to Zoe Kravitz’s braids because the 28-year-old actress, singer and model has chopped off her hair right on time for the warm weather ahead.

Since late last year, Kravitz has been rocking eye-catching platinum micro braids, sporting them in plenty of creative ways that have given us hair inspiration.

Oh shit: part 2 #newhair #whodis? @majormoonn @nikkinelms

A post shared by Zoë Kravitz (@zoeisabellakravitz) on

But while the braids were cute (and protective!), we’ve absolutely fallen in love with her new look. Earlier this week, she debuted a brand new ‘do: a chic pixie cut. Cut and styled to perfection by celebrity hairstylist Nikki Nelms (known for styling the likes of Janelle Monae, Kelly Rowland, Jurnee Smollett), Kravitz’s cropped look remains platinum but gives her even more edge.

Ladies, what are your thoughts? Are you feeling Zoe’s new look?

You may not hear a lot about the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, but the annual event has been going strong for more than 25 years. In that time, it has awarded more than $8 million in grants to HBCU students.

The car company established the challenge in an attempt to highlight the academic talents of those who attend historically Black colleges and universities. It’s also been done to help support these institutions of higher learning through monetary support via grants. This money covers tuition, scholarships, the cost of books, student programs and improvements to campus facilities.

HCASC

Sounds great, right? Well, what exactly is the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge? It’s a competition where representatives from 89 schools that turned into 48 and will slim down to the final four test their knowledge, via beat-the-buzzer questions, on everything from world history and science to religion, literature, pop culture and the arts. And while all the schools that participate in the challenge are awarded grants, the teams that take home third and fourth place will be given $20,000. The team that gets second place will be given $30,000. The big winner will be given a $75,000 institutional grant.

But one of the greatest benefits of the challenge, aside from money, is the connections made by participating students. There are more than 125,000 former contestants now known as HCASC alumni, and many are successful in a variety of fields, including engineering, law, medicine and education. Some, who have made outstanding strides in their respective fields, are inducted into the HCASC Alumni Hall of Fame. Many of these same individuals become mentors to current competitors at the annual event.

Last year’s winner was Florida A&M. Who will take home the title this time around? You can support these schools and their students by tuning in to the HCASC National Championship Finals. The competition which will take place on Monday, April 10 at 12 p.m. EDT and will be streaming on HCASC.com, live streaming from the Honda campus in Torrance, California. You can also check out the competition through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Word on the street is that Phaedra Parks, the self-proclaimed “Southern Belle” with multi-faceted interests and careers, has been axed from the Real Housewives of AtlantaAfter being on the popular Bravo TV franchise for seven years, there have been online reports alleging that Parks was let go for the upcoming tenth season due to being too manipulative even for reality TV and being caught in “treacherous lies this season.”

Love B. Scott claimed, “Everyone was given their renewal papers last week and Phaedra didn’t get hers. She got caught in so many treacherous lies this season that even the producers (including Andy Cohen) have had enough. She even brought ‘fake’ divorce papers to the reunion to prove a point. No one knows whether she’s telling the truth about anything anymore.”

However, Parks camp denied the allegations on Friday (April 7), telling Page Six that the rumors are “untrue.”

Well, Bravo has yet to release a statement or respond to the rumor so only time will tell. In the meantime, we’re already ready with our popcorn for the show’s epic reunion special.

Finally, There’s A Bralette Busty Gals Can Rock With Confidence

Whoever said bralettes were only allowed to be worn by those with A or B cups lied. Well, sort of. The traditional barrettes that you and I think of have no support, which is why most ladies with larger chests stay away from them. But now, that’s all changed thanks to the “Busty Bralette” created by indie lingerie brand Lively.

Made specifically for women who are well endowed (34D to 38DDD) the lightly lined triangle top is amazing and comes in jet-black and soft pink. And the best part? It retails for an affordable $35.

“Inclusivity has always been one of our brand’s most important pillars, so extending sizing has always been a goal; we knew over a year ago that we wanted to offer extended sizes, especially in bralettes,” Lively’s founder and CEO Michelle Cordeiro Grant told Refinery29. “It was something so rare in the category, and we definitely saw it as a void in the market.”

She Tried It! Dark And Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage Clumping Curl Crème Gel

Brande Victorian Anti-Shrinkage Clumping Curl Crème Gel

I’ll be honest, I typically don’t have a hard time finding products that work for my hair texture. I’m a product junkie mostly because I like trying things that are new, not necessarily because I need something different. But a few years ago I tried one of the products in Dark and Lovely’s Au Naturale line which was pretty new at the time and it didn’t do anything for my curls. Turns out, I was using the wrong product for my hair type.

A few months ago we told you about Dark and Lovely’s new Clumping Curl line, designed to reduce shrinkage, moisturize hair, and define curls. I was on the fence about giving the cleanser and creme gel a try, but when I learned it was designed specifically for Curl Type 3a-3c, I figured, why not? My hair has also been extremely dry lately and I wanted to see if a new product might fix things.

Before washing my hair, I did a pre-poo oil treatment to try to improve my dryness. After about 20 minutes of letting the oil penetrate my hair under a conditioning cap, I rinsed and prepared to wash. The first thing I noticed about the cleanser is its thick texture. I actually squeezed the product into my hand and then checked the bottle to make sure it wasn’t conditioner. That’s when I noticed the directions advise you to use the cleanser like a co-wash: “Massage a generous amount of the Clumping Curl Clay Cleanser throughout wet hair. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes to soften hair for easy detangling. Rinse thoroughly.”

As soon as I applied the cleanser I felt my hair begin to soften, thanks to its Kaolin Clay, Argan and Coconut Oil composition. I let the product sit on my hair for about four minutes as directed and then rinsed. In addition to how soft my hair felt, I also knew my hair was completely clean. I’d been using a lot of gel on my hair recently and the cleanser removed all of the buildup I had as well as the hardness on the ends of my hair.

I didn’t towel dry or comb through my hair at all after cleansing. While my hair was completely wet, I began applying the Dark And Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage Clumping Curl Crème Gel. As I always say, I love a good creamy gel because it saves me a step in the styling process, but not all products like this are created equal. What distinguishes Dark and Lovely’s duo is the clumping aspect. Clumping is a washing and cleansing technique using a number of different products like Bentonite Clay, Apple Cider Vinegar, water and oils to bind hair strands together, creating thicker, more defined curls. This line basically takes all those steps and the mess out of the process with a cleanser that binds curls and a Crème Gel that holds the curls together.

I applied the Crème Gel to my hair section by section, stretching as I applied the product, and then I let my hair air dry. Within a couple of hours, my hair was almost completely dry and my curls were super defined and shiny.

Brande Victorian Anti-Shrinkage Clumping Curl Crème Gel

Brande Victorian Anti-Shrinkage Clumping Curl Crème Gel

I was also pretty amazed the product lived up to it’s anti-shrinkage claim. Since I’d tried this style on my hair just the day before with a different product I could tell the difference in my curl length and fullness with the clumping cleanser and gel, and the sheen my hair had was far greater. To finish the look I just applied a little gel and edge control on the sides of my center part and my edges and I was good to go — and pleasantly surprised the wind didn’t knock the sails out of my curls Saturday evening.

If you have a coarser hair type but still want to check out Dark and Lovely’s anti-shrinkage technology, the brand’s Au Naturale Coil Moisturizing Souffé is an option for 4a-c curl types.

The moisturizing souffle defines and moisturizes using Mango Oil and Bamboo milk to tighten curls and coils, making hair soft and more manageable.

Have you tried any Dark and Lovely Au Naturale products? How’d they work for you?

How To Add Fiber To Your Dessert

[caption id="attachment_825497" align="alignleft" width="1068"] Bigstockphoto.com/Young woman eating delicious macaroon on white background[/caption] Is your day not complete without dessert? Are you the one person at the table who does want to see the dessert menu, when everyone else (cowards) shakes their heads, pats their full tummies and says, “I couldn’t possibly?” Do you believe a host who doesn’t serve dessert at her dinner party is a bad host? I feel you. I also feel the extra pant size I carry because of my love of dessert. If you aren’t willing to give up the literal maraschino cherry on top of your day, you can at least find ways to make your sweet dishes healthier. By adding fiber to a dish, you make that food more filling, so you won’t need as many bites before you feel satisfied. Here are easy, smart ways to add fiber to your dessert (so you can feel less bad about it). [caption id="attachment_706515" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Cereal with your ice cream

If you’re an ice cream fiend, instead of adding sugary granola to your sundaes, add high-fiber cereal like Muesli (it also has dried fruit for more fiber) or grape-nuts.         [caption id="attachment_713121" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Dark chocolate-covered berries

Get your dark chocolate fix and add berries. Dark chocolate-covered blueberries and raspberries are delicious; the sweet berries cut some of the bitterness of the chocolate and add fiber.       [caption id="attachment_825498" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/Fruit and berry crumble cake with oat and wholemeal topping[/caption]

Eat crumbles instead of pie

Pie contains a lot of crust, which has empty calories and fiber-less flour. Make crumbles instead of pie, and use whole oats. You only need a little bit of the crumble to add texture and sweetness.         [caption id="attachment_693498" align="alignleft" width="500"] Shutterstock.com/poached pears[/caption]

Try pear tarts

Pears are incredibly high in fiber, and you can make a tart with a much thinner crust than a pie has. Layer the tart high with baked pears and add a little syrup and cinnamon.     [caption id="attachment_695544" align="alignleft" width="406"] FoodNetwork.com[/caption]

Switch to oatmeal cookies

If you’re the cookie monster around your house, there are some pretty tasty high-fiber cookies out there. Grab a bag that has flax seeds or pumpkin seeds mixed in with oatmeal.     [caption id="attachment_825499" align="alignleft" width="420"] a glass of rice pudding with cinnamon with a maroon napkin[/caption]

Try brown rice pudding

If you like rice pudding, try making it with brown rice. You can add pieces of prunes for added sweetness and fiber.             [caption id="attachment_627011" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Almond pastries

Almonds are very high in fiber and make tons of delicious desserts. You can make a sweet pastry filling with sliced almonds and brown sugar, or simply make an almond tart.   [caption id="attachment_697872" align="alignleft" width="419"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Squash or zucchini bread

Squash and zucchini are naturally high in fiber, so don’t forget about these traditional desserts. You can easily sneak a little flax seed into the batter too, for more fiber.         [caption id="attachment_713127" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Sweet popcorn

Popcorn is already a high-fiber snack. Make it a dessert by drizzling pure maple syrup on it, or adding cinnamon, or mixing in bittersweet chocolate. There are a lot of ways to make popcorn sweet without using caramel.         [caption id="attachment_718719" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Banana…everything

Bananas are high in fiber and have a natural creaminess that makes them great for making homemade ice cream, dessert smoothies, pudding, custards, and pies.           [caption id="attachment_715102" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Fruit cream cheese toast

Try putting a little cream cheese on some high-fiber toast, and topping it off with berry compote. You can also use fresh berries, baked pear slices, baked apple slices or any fruit you like.           [caption id="attachment_698596" align="alignleft" width="420"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Add pumpkin seeds to your baked goods

In the fall, add pumpkin seeds to your baked goods. They’re delicious in pumpkin cupcakes, berry crumbles, and even in your ice cream for a little crunch.           [caption id="attachment_717963" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Add bran to your banana bread

Banana bread, heated up with a little vanilla frozen yogurt on it is heaven. You can sneak bran into your batter, and you won’t tell the difference.             [caption id="attachment_825546" align="alignnone" width="900"] Red popsicle on yellow background and yellow popsicle on pink background[/caption]

Make berry popsicles

When the weather heats up, consider making berry popsicles. Just mix water with a little agave and whole chunks of berries, put them in cups or popsicle molds, and freeze. [caption id="attachment_825503" align="alignleft" width="420"] Bigstockphoto.com/White plate full of delicious raw protein balls. Healthy sweets for sport people. Homemade dessert. Raw sweets made of nuts coconut dates and cacao[/caption]

Try coconut-covered date balls

Dates have a lot of fiber (12 grams in just one cup), and there are endless ways to use them in dessert. One simple way is to mash them up, roll them into balls, and cover them in coconut shreds (also high in fiber).

7 Ways To Celebrate National Siblings Day Today

$
0
0

There is no bond like the one of sisters. Your sister can be a confidant by helping you hide the biggest secret or piss you off by stealing your favorite earrings! Either way, the time shared between siblings is priceless and today is the day to celebrate that joy. Here are 7 ways you and your sister — or brother — can turn up on National Sibling Day:

  1. Karaoke night– Put together a play list of Beyoncé and Solange songs and bring your best vocals to the living room stage! If you have several sisters, create a playlist of girl groups so everyone can participate.
  2. Take it outside- Remember the park you used to play in? Grab your sis and have a picnic for two. Take turns pushing each other on the swing and own the playground like you did as kids.
  3. Do something she’ll least expect- My sister has been drinking coffee since she was 5 and I hate coffee. Treating her to Starbucks and taking my first swig would really knock her socks off and get her to leave me alone about trying it. If you usually avoid babysitting her children, extend the offer.
  4. Rage Against the Machine- Sometimes parents just don’t understand. What movies did your parents ban you from watching because they were “too grown” for you back in the day? I know some siblings who missed out on all the best rap videos from the mid to late 90s because their parents were stricter than security at Fort Knox. This is the perfect day for you and sis to play catch up on what you missed.
  5.  Give each other a makeover- It’s the second quarter of the year, and everyone needs to revamp their look for Spring. Make it a day of bonding and beauty by picking out each other’s latest hairstyle or hair color.
  6. Apologize- If you’ve done something to offend your sister and haven’t had the notion to apologize, today might be the day. Swallow your pride and do it.
  7. Just have some good old girl talk- If you’re the type to be consumed by work and your relationship, it’s time to put family first. Life happens and we all have responsibilities, but your sister will always be your sister and needs you just as much as your boss or your boyfriend. Pick up the phone and call her.

What Women Should Know About Crohn’s Disease

[caption id="attachment_825509" align="alignleft" width="1068"] Bigstockphoto.com/High Angle View Of Young African Woman With Stomach Ache Lying On Sofa[/caption] If you’ve been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease you are likely feeling a combination of terror and relief. Crohn’s comes with some rather debilitating symptoms that are very frightening, and hard to get a handle on, so you’re likely relieved to finally understand your condition. On the other hand, if you know a bit about the disease, then you know it is chronic, and that you have a lifetime of symptom management ahead of you. Crohn’s affects men and women differently. Since Crohn’s symptoms affect the parts of our body very near our reproductive organs, it can, unfortunately, upset more than just a woman’s digestive health and stomach. It’s important women understand that so they aren’t taken by surprise by the additional symptoms that may follow. Here are things women should know about how Crohn’s will affect them. [caption id="attachment_612221" align="alignleft" width="378"] Corbis Images[/caption]

It can cause pain during sex

In some cases, Crohn’s can cause inflammation of the genitals, which can make sex uncomfortable. Because the rectum and vaginal canal sit so close together, the inflammation that comes with Crohn’s, plus the pressure involved in sex, can be uncomfortable.             [caption id="attachment_608268" align="alignleft" width="467"] Shutterstock[/caption]

It may enhance chances of cervical cancer

One study found that women with Crohn’s face a heightened risk of pre-cancerous cells in the cervix becoming cancerous. If you do have Crohn’s, talk to your gynecologist about having more frequent pap smears.         [caption id="attachment_620621" align="alignleft" width="425"] Corbis[/caption]

Many women feel insecure about having sex

Because of the nature of heterosexual sex for women, many women fear that intercourse can cause their symptoms to act up, and may irritate their bowels, forcing stool out.       [caption id="attachment_704593" align="alignleft" width="476"] Shutterstock[/caption]

It may mean severe PMS cramps

PMS cramps can be very severe in women with Crohn’s disease. Talk to your doctor about safe medication you can take to ease aggressive PMS cramps.

And symptoms may flare up around your period

All Crohn’s symptoms may flare up around your period. Many women report having even more bowel movements during menstruation.         [caption id="attachment_697524" align="alignleft" width="468"] Image: Shutterstock[/caption]

It can affect your body image

Most inflammatory bowel diseases tend to affect the body image and confidence of women more than they affect those of men. Since women are already so pre-conditioned to be aware of their stomach and midsection, having an illness that causes bloat and weight loss in this area only aggravate insecurities.       [caption id="attachment_708423" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

It may cause missed periods

Since Crohn’s can cause hormonal fluctuations and rapid changes in weight, it is quite common for women who suffer from the condition to miss some periods.           [caption id="attachment_620001" align="alignleft" width="500"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

It can cause dangerous nutrient deficiencies

Crohn’s can make it difficult for your body to properly absorb nutrients. This is a problem for both men and women, but women should watch their Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid levels closely. [caption id="attachment_719117" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Menstruation plus Crohn’s affects your iron

Crohn’s causes iron deficiencies in both men and women because it can cause blood loss. But since women also lose blood during menstruation, periods combined with Crohn’s can make iron deficiencies even more severe in women.       [caption id="attachment_719371" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

It can lead to fertility issues

Trying to conceive when your symptoms are acting up can be very difficult. Fortunately, when symptoms are in recession, many women with Crohn’s manage to become pregnant and carry out healthy pregnancies.         [caption id="attachment_616935" align="alignleft" width="405"] Shutterstock[/caption]

Some medications can harm a baby

Some medications used to treat Crohn’s disease can be harmful to a growing fetus. If you plan on becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor now about switching to medications that will be safe for your baby.         [caption id="attachment_710885" align="alignleft" width="428"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

Some medications cannot be taken while breastfeeding

Some medications used to treat Crohn’s are not safe to take when you are breastfeeding. Discuss a medication plan with your doctor before your baby arrives to ensure safe breastfeeding.       [caption id="attachment_696955" align="alignleft" width="378"]NYC Bartenders Now Obligated To Serve Pregnant Patrons Shutterstock[/caption]

It may heighten the risk of miscarriage

Having active Crohn’s symptoms while pregnant can slightly increase a woman’s chances of a miscarriage. Because the reproductive and digestive system sit so close together, any upset to one can disrupt the other.           [caption id="attachment_704930" align="alignleft" width="420"] Image Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

But pregnancy may decrease Crohn’s symptoms

Interestingly enough, while Crohn’s poses some challenges for pregnant women, pregnancy has been found to boost the immune system in ways that alleviate some Crohn’s symptoms.         [caption id="attachment_707441" align="alignleft" width="600"] Source: Shutterstock[/caption]

It can make dating difficult

Men and women alike can feel very insecure about telling their new partners about their condition. But women as a whole report feeling less comfortable discussing digestive conditions.

Zoe Saldana’s Wax Figure Is Dead On

Getting a wax figure has almost become like getting a star on the walk of fame for celebs — it’s a big deal. And that’s what makes it all the more tragic when a wax figure is unveiled and it looks absolutely nothing like the celebrity (they still can’t get one right for Beyoncé). But Zoe Saldana doesn’t have to worry about that. Her wax statue is a dead ringer for the Dominican actress.

On Friday, Zoe and her husband Margo Perego arrived at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood for the unveiling of the statue along with her mother Asalia Nazario and grandmother Argentina Cesse. The couple who recently welcomed their third child together in February appeared to have a lot of fun posing with the figure whose likeness matches Zoe’s perfectly.

Thirty-eight-year-old Zoe has come a long way since most of us first encountered her in “Drumline” and “Crossroads” in 2002, and by 2009, Zoe was a certified star thanks to her role as Neytiri in “Avatar.” Her star power has only increased thanks to recurring parts in the latest “Star Trek” sequels and she’s already slated for more roles through 2018.

We say this wax figure is very deserving and we’re glad Madame Tussauds got it right.

When news broke this past weekend about Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana calling it quits, everyone was pretty shocked. The two had just welcomed their first child together, Eissa, a boy born in January. (They reportedly split right after Eissa was born.) Not only that, but they genuinely looked happy together, with Jackson telling Harper's Bazaar Arabia that the couple have "a deep bond, a deep connection." But in retrospect, we never really knew that much about the man. Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about Jackson's soon-to-be ex-husband, Wissam Al Mana. Wissam Al Mana

Al Mana is the executive director of the Al Mana Group, which is a Qatari conglomerate that works with 55 companies in eight different countries. It does automotive distribution, food and beverage, real estate, media and entertainment, and retail that includes luxury goods, jewelry, beauty and home interiors. Earlier this year we told you that Ronnie DeVoe of New Edition and his wife, Shamari DeVoe (formerly Fears) of Blaque, were expecting their first child together. He announced the news while showing love to the 37-year-old beauty on her birthday:

Instagram Photo

The two have been married since March 2006 and have always been an adorable couple. Since announcing that they’re expecting though, they’ve taken their cuddliness to the next level. A clear example of this is the couple’s recent fun and #funkyfresh photo shoot. They attended a birthday party for Samari’s sorority sister (she’s an AKA by the way) over the weekend. The bash was 80s-themed and they definitely kept in line with it by rocking matching Adidas tracksuits (hers was a dress), Cazal-inspired glasses, gold dookie chains and Kangol bucket hats. Check out the three different photographs they took together at the event:

Are they not the cutest?

So many blessings for DeVoe in such a short span of time! Not only was the New Edition biopic on BET a huge hit, encouraging the members to get back in the studio, but his first child with his wife of 11 years will make an arrival soon. Talk about a great start to a new year!

Tyrese Has A Message For Promiscuous Women & Black Twitter Clapsback

Y'all I hate to write about Tyrese twice in one day. But this conversation right here, is an important one for the culture. So, I guess because Tyrese and his wife abstained from sex for sixty days, he likely views himself as pious and righteous. And in his new and elevated space, he's taking the time to look down on the "promiscuous women." The "hoes," "sluts," "skeezers"...you know the "aggressive" types. (I'm sure you realize these are Tyrese's words not my own.) And while most of these rants take place on his social media accounts, the latest on is brought to us by BET, the network dedicated to Black people.  You can listen to a portion of the rest of them in the video below. Sadly, far too often Black women are not considered a part of the equation when it comes to Black folk. And perhaps that's the reason this video ever saw the light of day. But it did. And as you can imagine, when it hit the internet, people had a LOT to say about it. And most of it was not favorable but it was spot on. Check out the response on the following pages. And then Kimberly Foster, creator of For Harriet went all the way in, in this string of tweets.

Issa Rae Says Mission Of Insecure Was To Showcase Positive Black Female Friendships

While speaking at Deadline’s second annual Contenders Emmys in New York, Issa Rae was asked about what she set out to do with Insecure when she created the series. One might assume her mission was to display the experiences of everyday Black women dating, working and just living. Simple, yet still an important depiction. But really, the inspiration, according to Rae, was to change the way certain people and places as a whole are represented on TV — particularly Black women and the places we live.

Issa Rae Insecure

“I knew that I wanted to have a show set in L.A, I knew that I wanted to highlight specific parts of L.A. that I hadn’t seen demonstrated in the most positive light in the last couple of years,” she said in a panel event. “And I wanted to make South L.A. sexy!”

She continued, speaking on the importance of highlighting positive relationships between Black women. “I think for such a long time, I just was not seeing great black female friendships on television. It was constantly about tearing one another down or throwing shade. There are elements of that, but for the most part, black women are essential to my life.”

With those things being the mission of the series, Rae was asked what fans should expect when Season 2 returns this summer.

“I think with Season 2, we’re picking up where we left off, and we’re exploring just what it looks like when everyone’s doing what they’re supposed to be doing,” Rae said. “When you’re single, what are you supposed to be doing? When someone tells you you need therapy, what are you supposed to be doing? Without giving too much away, I always tell people to imagine, if your friends had been in the scenarios at the end of Season 1, what would they do, or what would you do? That’s probably how Season 2 will play out.”

Season 2 of the hit HBO comedy will premiere on July 23rd.

50 Cent Punches Woman During Concert, Invites Her On Stage To Twerk After The Fact

In the latest edition of “Things that make you go hmmm,” we’re searching for an explanation as to what the hell is going on in a video of 50 Cent and a fan having a much less than pleasant interaction that TMZ shared today.

50 Cent punches woman

The rapper was taking part in a performance with The Lox in Baltimore on Saturday when he went out to the edge of the stage to greet fans. When he reached out to shake hands with them, one woman pulled on his hand a little too hard in what seemed to be excitement. He either ended up being pulled down or decided to jump down off of the stage as he was losing his balance. While coming down from it, he launched his fist at the woman. A punch landed on her chest and everyone in the crowd seemed shocked.

Immediately realizing he messed up, the rapper requested that the woman be brought up on stage as some sort of mea culpa and a means to avoid a lawsuit. It seemed to work out because as the show continued, the woman was seen near the back of the stage twerking happily and wholeheartedly as if she hadn’t been physically assaulted earlier. It was one of the most confusing things we’ve seen — well, today.

And while 50 might have been able to dodge immediate consequences for punching the woman, history has taught us that lawsuits can always come later. Just ask the lady Miguel landed on during the Billboard Awards in 2013 — she sued him two years after the incident.

Check out the video for yourself, which begins with a different woman being called a “b—h” and a “thot” by another performer, which sadly, isn’t a shock, but still an unacceptable mess.

As If You Needed An Excuse To Drink, Science Proves Wine Is Great For Your Brain

According to new research done by neuroscientist Dr. Gordon Shepherd, which was shared by The Independent, not only is wine delicious, but it’s a fantastic workout for the brain.

wine good for the brain

The Yale School of Medicine professor said that sniffing wine and analyzing the taste with our tongue takes some “exquisite control of one of the biggest muscles in the body.” How? According to the years he spent studying the ways in which our brains process flavors, he found that when we swirl wine around our mouth, the muscles of our tongue, as well as thousands of taste and odor receptors, are kicked into high gear. This analysis of the aromatic flavors is said to stimulate the brain in ways even solving tough math problems can’t seem to do.

In his new book, Neuroenology: How The Brain Creates The Taste of Wine, Shepherd stated that through his studies, he came to the conclusion that the taste of wine has nothing to do with the specific drink in question, but rather, the taste “is created by the brain of the wine taster.”

Those tastes are based on our own references of flavor, which come from “our own memories and emotions and those of our companions,” as well as the composition of our saliva, our ages and gender.

Swallowing the wine is said to be paramount to the tasting process (not spitting it out as some do at tastings), which gives your brain that workout. However, if you drink too much, you’re giving your brain a bad workout — so don’t say we gave you an excuse to get your guzzle on, friends.
