June’s Diary Returns With A Melodic Remake Of Jodeci’s “Stay”

While we were saddened by the news that BET’s Chasing Destiny won’t be returning for a second season, Kelly Rowland’s protégées and divas-in-training, aka, June’s Diary are still on a roll.

After premiering their debut single “L.A.N.C.E,” the quintet has been hard at work in the studio while on the road with R. Kelly as the opening act for “The After Party Tour.” Interestingly enough, back in December the groups creative director Frank Gatson shared both disappoint and optimism about the ladies future, saying:

When we get it right. There will be an EP. or Album…lance- did nothing. All of us-did nothing. Wrap around did nothing. Alright-did nothing. We need a hit song. Then we will release a EP. The girls are working hard to find a hit. They have done almost 100 songs. Touring with R kelly is getting Fan base up. Amen to that. Essence in July is a blessing. #blessed We must find a hit song. Send one if you have it. A lot of people don’t know who @Junesdiary is.”

Well, there hasn’t been an update on whether or not the gals got the hit that they’ve been praying for but they just dropped a track that’s pretty hot. Instead of an original track, they decided to put their spin on Jodeci’s “Stay.” Their ode is chockfull of warm harmonies and melodies that remind us why Rowland and Gatson fell in love with these ladies during the show.

Press play on the video below and get into June’s Diary cover of “Stay.” Are you feeling it?

Could a “Lotus Birth” Be Better For You and Baby?

lotus birth

Whether a woman is giving birth in a giraffe head, Drake is dating Jennihana Minaj or some misspelled astrology meme is telling me “Saggiterius is most like Confetti Cupcake Pop Tarts” I unfortunately assume that a majority of the posts that scroll past on my Facebook feed are fake news. Call me Donald Trump, but I just feel like people will post anything for likes, attention and validation so I don’t take much I see on social media seriously. So of course I felt like this the other day when a friend reposted a status from a user called, “My Lotus Birth Baby”. Maybe I still have some lingering pregnancy hormones, because I couldn’t just keep scrolling when pictures of a precious newborn baby caught my attention with…wait…is that a placenta lying next to him on a pillow?

I had to zoom in and when I did I saw pictures of this adorable baby boy with what looked to be his shriveled umbilical cord still attached to the placenta. Some pictures showed a young woman basking in the glow of new motherhood, cradling her newborn in her arms in the comfort of her own home. In another picture, the placenta sat nearby on a satin pillow covered in what I first thought were maggots (but later found out was actually rosemary and other herbs). What in the natural, holistic hell was going on in these photos? The description (which I admittedly didn’t read until after looking at the pictures) provided details on a practice known as umbilical non-severance more commonly known as “lotus birth”.

According to a Huffington Post article published a few years ago, a lotus birth occurs when a woman chooses to leave the umbilical cord attached to the newborn baby after birth and allow it to detach on its own. This process can take as long as 10 days and requires the new parent(s) to care for the placenta as well. Care includes keeping the placenta as free from humidity as possible, and parent(s) will often use drying agents such as salt and herbs to accomplish this (hence the rosemary).

“This can’t be real. These chicks will do anything for the Book,” I thought wearing a shade of self-righteous scarlet that doesn’t suit me. I began typing a comment that started with, “This sounds like all kinds of wrong.” Shortly after I expressed why I wouldn’t be signing up for a lotus birth anytime soon, a high school friend chimed in and mentioned she had recently had a lotus birth of her own with the birth of her daughter and felt it was actually better for the baby. It was then I began to consider this might be an actual thing and bee-lined it for *Corinne’s inbox.

“When? Where? Why? and How?” I asked my old friend and she was more than happy to educate me about the process. A mother of three children (two sons, six and seven years old and a one-year-old daughter), and currently expecting a fourth child, *Corinne is a veteran mother, entrepreneur and just generally super smart chick whose opinion I trust and respect. She shared with me why she chose a lotus birth for her last pregnancy:

“I have always been interested in the lotus birth but was scared to try it due to the negativity that I have heard about it from the past.”

In a country dominated by modern medicine, umbilical non-severance is a practice that isn’t endorsed by much of the medical community and therefore most people don’t have much knowledge about what it entails. Experts warn that opting to leave the placenta attached to the baby after birth isn’t without risk. In 2008, The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) released a statement outlining some concerns after a small number of women in the United Kingdom started practicing lotus births. Patrick O’Brien, an RCOG spokesperson noted the following:

“If left for a period of time after the birth, there is a risk of infection in the placenta which can consequently spread to the baby.”

“The placenta is particularly prone to infection as it contains blood. At the post-delivery stage, it has no circulation and is essentially dead tissue.”

Corinne agrees that woman seeking lotus births should be prepared to provide extra care to avoid these risks:

“Lotus births require additional time. You have to take care of it like another baby. You have to wait for full transfusion of the umbilical blood into the baby before handling the placenta. Then you will wash the placenta gently with warm water and pat it dry. Once the placenta is dry, then you put it into a colander for about 24 hrs so that it can drain. Afterwards, you’ll put the placenta into a cloth and dress it necessarily with sea salt and lavender to mask the musky smell.”

Still, she’s happy with the decision since prior birthing experiences didn’t always go according to plan:

“I knew about the lotus birth since I had my first child. For my first two births, I had them in a traditional hospital setting. When it was time to give birth, my doctor wasn’t there because she wasn’t on call at the time. I ended up giving birth with doctors that I didn’t know which made me feel a tad uncomfortable. I always wanted to experience having a birth in a birthing center or with a midwife. It’s much more personal. Midwifes are there from the moment you are pregnant to the birth of your baby. My midwife actually encourages lotus births because of the benefits to the baby.”

But now that we covered the “what”, why do women pursue lotus births? Does it benefit the mother and/or child in any way? Many midwives champion lotus births saying that allowing the cord to fall away in its own time leads to a cleaner wound at the umbilical site which lessens the chances of infection. Midwife, Mary Ceallaigh expressed in the HuffPost piece that the practice also “allows a complete transfer of placental/cord blood into the baby at a time when the baby needs that nourishment the most.”

Corinne also shared some of the benefits she’s witnessed from her daughter’s lotus birth. She says her daughter is calmer and more receptive to her than her sons and even when placed in daycare she wasn’t prone to sickness and infections nearly as often as the other children. Corinne also expressed how having a lotus birth affected her as a mother as well:

“It was more a mental and emotional thing for me. I was overwhelmed with joy that I was able to do it without the stares and snide remarks. My midwife was with me every step of the way. I couldn’t have done it without her.”

I’m still not exactly sold on lotus birth, but I am also the same person who was relieved when I found out I was going to have a c-section. I like the idea of hospital, a scheduled c-section and the control and predictability that comes with modern medicine. I’m just not a midwife and water birth kind of girl at this time in my life. But I do like the idea of becoming more intimate with the changes of your body and witnessing the surrealism of what it’s capable of in a way that traditional hospital births may not always allow you to do. If anything, learning about lotus birth reminded me that women have been doing this since the beginning of time and bringing healthy babies into the world whether they’re surrounded by a team of medical professionals or in the backseat of a cab.

Thinking you may want your next birth to be a lotus birth? Corinne says that every mother should do what they feel is best for them:

“Do extensive research. What may work for me, may not work for you. Make sure that if you do decide to do the lotus birth, that you have that written down in your birth plan especially if you are giving birth in a traditional hospital setting. There will be some doctors that discourage you from doing it, but there will be that particular doctor that will support you and assist you if needed.”

Have you ever had a lotus birth? Is it something you’d be interested in?

Boris Kodjoe Reminds Us of the Beautiful Bond Between Fathers and Daughters

boris kodjoe daughter Father's Day is still a few months away, but actor Boris Kodjoe recently made his fans’ hearts beat a bit faster and he wasn’t even flexing his pecs. The “Resident Evil” star took to his Instagram to post pics of him helping his daughter, Sophie, get ready for her first school dance. https://www.instagram.com/p/BRwkNKwhz9S/?taken-by=boriskodjoe&hl=en   Kodjoe, who is married to actress Nicole Ari Parker and father to their two children, Sophie (12 ) and Nicolas (10) often shares pictures of his family’s adventures on his Instagram page. The Kodjoe-Parkers have been giving us #RelationshipGoals since shooting those steamy scenes on the Soul Food television series. But Boris along with other actors like Kevin Hart, Lenny Kravitz and Jamie Foxx make it no secret that fatherhood is a big part of who they are as men and it’s refreshing to see a different side of these guys who are commonly seen as sex symbols. Here are a few reminders of what makes the bond between fathers and daughters so special along with some pics of Boris and his beautiful daughter Sophie. boris kodjoe and daughterThey show us that relationships between men and women can and should be about something other than sex. Of course conversations about sex and puberty can be difficult between any parent and child, but especially between a father and his baby girl. I believe, however, that fathers are their daughters’ first teachers that relationships and affection shown between men and women doesn’t always have to be sexual. My father was one of my first homies.  When I was seven we would cruise the Toys R Us aisles on his payday before my mother got off work. Now that he’s in his early sixties, him and my sister argue over which actor played the better "Dr. Who". My father taught me that conversations with the opposite sex don’t always have to include hormones and anatomy. boris kodjoe and daughterThey show us how to allow ourselves to be catered to. Hopefully I’m raising my daughter be a “strong, independent woman who don’t need a man”, but I must admit there’s a part of me that gives a man the side-eye when he walks off the elevator before me or doesn’t hold the door for me. Even when I’m clearly capable of helping, when I try to clean the snow off my car after a blizzard, my husband will tell me to take my behind in the house. When I still lived with my parents, my fifty-something-year-old father would do the same, even if he had to pull out the Icy, Hot for his back for the next few days. Fathers are a girl’s first reminder that being treasured, revered and cherished is a woman’s birthright. boris kodjoe and daughterThey’re our first protectors. Every winter at my parents’ house we’d get at least one determined mouse that would fight his way into our basement from the cold and then mistakenly decide to explore the whole house.  Even into adulthood when my sister or I caught something little and grey scamper across the wall out of the corner of our eyes we’d abandon our rooms and run to my father. He’d then stake out areas where he suspected the critter might be and stalk him for days like he was a poacher in the Amazon until the culprit was caught. Fathers reassure us that they will fly in to save the day while teaching us by example how to get the job done ourselves. boris kodjoe and daughter They teach us beauty is about a lot more than what we look like. My father was one of the first people who helped me discover that I even liked to write. He bought me colored pencils and marble notebooks and helped me brainstorm stories while we laid across the living room floor. And even as when I got to high school and suddenly was into boys more than books he would still share with me bestseller novels that he recently read that he thought I would like and encourage me to express my adolescent up’s and down’s through poetry. When you’re sixteen and think acceptance rises and falls on whether you choose a middle or side part, fathers remind us that we bring so much more to the table than our hair and makeup. boris kodjoe and daughterThey teach us one bruise or a little bit of blood don’t stop the show. There’s a brief second that my two-year-daughter realizes that belly-flopping onto the floor from the love seat probably wasn’t a good idea and looks to me and her father to gauge what happens next. Of course my instinct is to pick her up and banish the love seat to the trash bin for attempting to kill my baby. Her Dad, however will tell her to brush it off, and adjust her angle so she can land better next time. Dads show their daughters how to “man up” in the best way possible and we grow to be better, stronger, more resilient women in the future because of it. boris kodjoe and daughterThey teach us that sometimes the best thing you can do for your child is simply show up. At the beginning of 2017 it seemed my husband and I had one funeral after the other to attend, so when my father’s mother passed away exactly a month after my mother’s mother, I understood that he might not be able to make it because of his busy schedule.  But ten minutes into the ceremony, he came in quietly and stood in the back, work clothes and all to pay his respect and support my family. He didn’t make a big show of it, he just wanted my family to see a friendly, familiar face among the sea of mourners (some who were serious and some who were putting on a show). Moments like that remind me that as a father, husband or any important male figure in a female’s life, one of the best things you can do for her is show up and reassure her that she isn’t alone. What are some things you feel you father or the father-figure in your life taught you? Expectant Mother Killed By Train During Modeling Shoot

Many of us have gone to extreme lengths in order to achieve the perfect selfie or an epic pic for Instagram. Whether you catch a blurry version of Zendaya after staking out her favorite restaurant all day or you’re mimicking Beyonce’s  infamous “Formation” scene with fresh cornrows in your friend’s 69 Chevy Camaro. Either way the story of 20-year-old  Fredzania “Zanie” Thompson is an example of how the pursuit of the perfect photo can turn fatal if you aren’t careful.

The Eagle reports that Thompson was killed in the town of Navasota, Texas while posing on a set of tracks during a modeling shoot. Witnesses say the young woman was standing in between two sets of train tracks and watching for an oncoming train with her back turned toward an oncoming Union Pacific train. When she became aware that a train was coming in the direction she was facing she attempted to cross the Union Pacific tracks and was hit by a Union Pacific train she hadn’t spotted. She died en route to the hospital.

Years before, the athletic Navasota High School student had earned several scholarships and had initially chosen to attend Blinn College in Bryan. But she ultimately decided to put her education on hold as she pursued her dream of modeling. Thompson also learned she was about to become a mother. Her fiancé, 25-year-old Darnell Chatman spoke about how Thompson recently revealed she was expecting his child:

“”She said, ‘You’re going to be a dad again.’”

Chatman went on to say that his 7-year-old son woke up in tears shortly after learning about Thompson’s death, and that she had been a motherly figure to the boy which would’ve soon been her step-son.

“He thought [her death] was a dream.”

The family spoke of how caring and considerate Thompson was to siblings and friends and shared a few pictures that had been taken at the tracks that day. The photos, taken by a friend, were going to be added to a portfolio Thompson had begun assembling to further her modeling career.

GoFundMe page was created for Thompson’s funeral arrangements. Her funeral service was held on March 18, and she was buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Navasota, Texas according to her obituary. We hope the Thompson’s loved ones are able to find some peace at this time. Hopefully Thompson’s story will be a reminder of the importance of remaining aware of your surroundings while taking photos keeping your safety a priority.

That means even if there's snow still on the ground in your city, there's no arguing with the fact that winter is over and the season of sunshine and pastels is here. As such, it's time to revamp your beauty routine from head to toe and the first place we're starting is with our nails. While we love deep, earth tone nail colors as much as the next girl, we're also pretty excited about tossing those vampy shades to the side for a few months and swapping them out for corals, lavenders and nail art that makes us think of flowers blooming rather than snow shoveling. Marissa Alexander On Adjusting To Her New Freedom

$

We’ve been following the tragic and unjust story of Marissa Alexander for years now. As a brief refresher, in July 2010, days after giving birth, Alexander had an altercation with her then estranged husband Rico Gray. Before the incident, Alexander had a restraining order against Gray, who had been violent toward her on more than one occasion. When she learned of her pregnancy, she altered the order to remove the ban on contact. Nine days after the birth of their child, Gray showed up at Marissa’s home and attacked her.

In an open letter, Alexander described the incident.

“He assaulted me, shoving, strangling and holding me against my will, preventing me from fleeing all while I begged for him to leave.”

Alexander managed to escape from the garage but then she remembered that she had forgotten the keys to her truck. She grabbed her legally registered gun to reenter her home. When Gray charged at her, she fired a warning shot. Once Gray left, he called the police and told them Alexander had shot at him and his sons. She was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Alexander tried to argue self defense, under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. But a pretrial judge argued that Alexander could have left her home through the front or back doors. Despite the fact that Gray admitted to not only abusing Alexander but four other women with whom he had children and several family members testified to seeing injuries Gray had inflicted on Alexander, the judge instructed the jury that Alexander had to prove that Gray, beyond reasonable doubt, was committing aggravated battery when she fired the warning shot. After just twelve minutes, the jury returned with a guilty verdict.

Under prosecutor Angela Corey, who decided to add the 10-20 life sentencing enhancement, Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

In 2013, an appeals court overturned Alexander’s conviction and granting her a new trial. During the new trial, Alexander took a plea deal that included time served (1,030 days in jail) and another 65 days in jail and then two years house arrest.

After 1,095 days in jail, Alexander began house arrest confinement.

Alexander told Truthout that after being out of prison, house arrest provided some relief.
“Being at home and being able to be in the privacy of your own home and turn on a light and sit on a toilet by yourself with the door shut, you just cannot compare that to prison. I can go to the fridge and get what I want when I want.”

Still, Alexander had to pay for her relative freedom. In the state of Florida, people on house arrest have to pay for the cost of their monitoring devices. Alexander estimates that over the past two years, she spent over $10,000. And that doesn’t include the $105 biweekly cost of her electronic monitoring when she was awaiting her new trial.

“I feel like it’s money-making. Period. For electronic monitoring to be an actual alternative to incarceration, there would need to be “some type of pathway for people to really and truly get back on their feet and have resources available to them and some type of support system…You are putting people in the position that they are trying to pay for something that is difficult for them to pay for. Whatever money you paid to the system, they got, but you’re back in jail so now the taxpayers are paying for you. It’s a mess.”

For the first six months of her house arrest, Alexander was granted permission to leave her house only to take her children to school, look for employment and attend church services.

“All the other things you’re able to do, like grocery shopping or upkeep and things like that, I wasn’t able to do.”

Family and friends picked up the slack to take care of those necessities for Alexander and her children.

Eventually, a judge granted Alexander’s request to have the terms of the confinement relaxed, provided that each week Alexander turn in a schedule specifying where she planned to be at each hour.

“The idea is that you don’t deviate from your schedule. There’s been many a time that I’ve been cutting it close at getting home for whatever reason and I needed gas and my truck was on E [empty] and I was just like, ‘I’m going to have to have somebody else get the gas for me or wait for the next day to go back out and get the gas,” she said.

Then there were times when her schedule was not input into the system correctly.

“It’s human error, it happens,” acknowledged Alexander. She remembered several occasions in which she had specified on her schedule that she would be attending church, but when she walked out of her door and began making her way there her monitor began sounding an alert. On these occasions, her cell phone would promptly ring. “Hey, you’re not scheduled to be out. Why are you out?” the voice on the other line would ask. Alexander recalled, “In those instances, I’ll go back home. I wouldn’t go and do what I needed to do.”

Still, even when her schedule was entered properly, she wasn’t able to fully participate in life as she would wish. Alexander was allowed to attend parent-teacher conferences but not extracurricular activities.

“I missed my daughter’s entire basketball season.”

Alexander missed her youngest daughter’s elementary school award ceremony and there were many days when she couldn’t take her children out to the park or to ride their bikes.

“Those things are always really difficult,” she said.

Now, that she’s finally free, Alexander said she’s still adjusting.

“I find myself wanting to stay in my house just like I was doing before.”

Alexander has also been using her newfound freedom to advocate for changes in the system that took her away from her children. Last month, she spoke before the Senate Rule Committee in favor of Senate Bill 128 which would shift the burden of proof from the defendant to the state in Stand Your Ground hearings.

She told the committee: “I’m just going to give you three numbers. Number one. Number 12. And number 20. For me, one shot, a 12-minute verdict got me 20 years. I did go through a Stand Your Ground hearing. And in that hearing, you could tell the court and the prosecution struggled with that because it was difficult. With that said, putting a defendant in the position where they have to bear the burden of proof, in my opinion, removes your Constitutional right, the Fifth Amendment.”

In the two years she spent on house arrest, Alexander wrote a manuscript about her experiences and started the Marissa Alexander Justice Project, an organization that will work to end domestic violence, criminalization of abuse survivors, mandatory sentencing, sentencing disparities, the school-to-prison pipeline and the adjudication of teenagers as adults, for which Florida has the highest in the country.

“I’m going to be part of what’s already out there and use my experiences and my name to bring more to it,” Alexander said. “I’m not separate from anybody. This will be my contribution in solidarity.”

Serious Question: Do Social Media Lurkers Irk You?

When you post photos on social media, you may claim you’re not doing it for the ‘gram but we all expect some sort of affirmation of our flyness from our followers when we do. This is also known as getting likes and if don’t like enough of your people’s photos you may soon find yourself disliked and unfollowed.

I knew social media lurking was a thing in the realm of enemy territory. You know, people who don’t really like you scrolling to see what your Internet life is about just so they can dislike you even more — and vice versa (tell the truth about yourself and shame the devil). But I didn’t know there were people who felt a way about real life friends and followers not liking their photos. That’s probably because I didn’t know people had enough time on their hands to truly pay attention to loyal double tappers verses lurkers.

But lo and behold, I’ve come across many a status criticizing people who don’t like posts about their accomplishments, or coming for people who mention things they’ve posted in person but didn’t like in the virtual world. I’ve even been confronted in person about my lack of liking which I chalked up to the fact that I post stuff on IG and dip out for the most part, unless I’m making a concerted effort to support friends and other people who are trying to do something with their social media platforms other than fill a void of feeling inadequate.

To be perfectly honest, I’ve never really thought about who wasn’t liking my pictures; I’ve always been more surprised and felt my supported by those who do. Sometimes I find people I didn’t even know were “lurking,” I suppose, are paying attention and that feels good. But in reality, I have almost 1,700 IG followers and have never gotten more than 200 likes on a photo that wasn’t with a celebrity on a red carpet. I have more lurkers than loyal followers, pretty much like everyone else who uses these platforms.

So that’s why I don’t feel a way about not having 1,700 likes on every picture I post. I also know everyone is not going to like everything that I post. The beauty of these social platforms is you can like what you actually like and scroll on past what you don’t. I don’t care if you lurk instead of like, the very fact that effort is put into watching what I’m doing says I’m doing something right and I don’t feel any type of way about friends and followers who genuinely don’t have time to big-up my selfies every other day, i.e. don’t live on social media. When I need their support in the real world I know they’ll be there. That’s if they haven’t cut me off for not supporting their social media status enough.

Do you have an issue with people lurking on your social media pages rather than liking posts?

So Much For Customer Service: 10 Signs A Business Doesn’t Deserve Another Red Cent From You

Have you ever gone out of your way to support a business only to regret it? In this day and age, the chances are high. There are more businesses out there than ever: online, pop-up and actual retail stores, and despite all of that, much less customer service. Everybody has a business now, but not everyone is interested in offering their best. With that being said, whether it's Black businesses, White businesses, brown, green, whatever, not everyone is deserving of your dollar. When they make that clear the first time, take your business elsewhere.

You're Doing All of the Work

Poor communication is a big no-no. If you order something from a business and the only information you receive is a confirmation email, that doesn't mean much. They have your money, but when is the product coming? If you have to run down people to get shipping information, they don't keep in touch with you to let you know when an order is ready, and you're calling and emailing at all times of the day and night just to ensure you haven't been hoodwinked, that business doesn't deserve your dime -- they deserve a scolding.

They Do Business in a Seedy Way

A business should have a contact number, some real info, a website. Something! Telling someone to contact you over direct message to conduct business matters makes a prospective customer feel like they're about to get their identity stolen. In my own experience, I once commissioned a tailor to make a dress for me and gave him a month to make it. Just a few days before the event that I needed to wear it to, he text me (with the worst spelling) asking if I could send him my design ideas again. He would go on to make the dress in less than 24 hours. Trust me, it looked like it. customer service

They Don't Right Their Wrongs

When they do something really shady, they don't try to appease you. No discounts, no real changes put in place. Instead, all that happens is you get a "Sorry about that." A friend of mine was burned by wax while getting her eyebrows done at a popular beauty spot. When she reached out to the business to let them know what happened, they didn't get back to her. And when I received less than welcoming service from a yoga studio, only to be contacted later to ask if I would come back, I got crickets when I called out management's poor treatment. In both cases, we decided not to return to the businesses in question. time, woman checking watch

Hours Are Whenever They Feel Like Showing Up

The door might say 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., but really, it's whenever people feel like showing up to do their job. If you find yourself looking to support a business that often has a "We'll be back in..." sign on their door, they're not serious enough to deserve your coins.

They Make You Wait...and Wait...and Wait

More than 30 minutes for your food at a restaurant; to get your hair done despite the fact that you made an appointment and have somewhere to be in a few hours; for whatever the hell you bought. Businesses that make you look like a sitting duck and don't deem it necessary to explain themselves in the meantime should only get to fool you once.

They Don't Treat You the Same As Other Customers

Maybe it's because you are a consistent customer, or maybe it's because you don't look like other customers (if you know what I mean). Whatever the deal is, you notice that you're often put on the back burner at establishments you support. In total contrast, those who are assumed to have more money or are newer customers that owners need to make a good impression on have the red carpet rolled out for them. business, bad customer service

You Give Away Money but Don't Feel Appreciated

If you dole out dollars (and not just a few measly coins) to a business but walk away feeling like they could care less about your contributions (you honestly don't even feel good when you leave), why keep going back?

You Get More Attitude Than Customer Service

Anytime you feel like you're treated as more of a bother than a benefit (Lord help you if you ask what's considered one question too many), you're giving your money away to the wrong people.

You Feel Like You're Supporting for the Wrong Reasons

You want to support because you're a woman and their business is owned by women. You're Black and they're Black. You went to school together. You know the business owner through your sister and you want to encourage them. Despite all of that, they can't get it together, and you can't keep wasting your time and money trying to help them do so.

The Quality of What They Offer Is Poor

Remember that tailor I told you about? Well, the dress he made for me wasn't worth more than $35 and could have been bought at a store. Unfortunately though, it cost my husband $125. We gave the guy a chance, but we're not giving him a second chance. Same goes for the restaurant that keeps burning certain dishes I order, the bike shop that left me standing in the heat for 45 minutes, the lingerie store whose bras loose their support time and again but cost a grip, and any other businesses that can and should do better.   Images via Shutterstock and Bigstock

Thank Maxine Waters: FBI Director James Comey Investigating Trump’s Ties To Russia

There were a few people who didn’t care for the way Rep. Maxine Waters went about expressing her dislike and distrust of Donald Trump. They thought by not attending his inauguration, she was being too stubborn, too outspoken, too uncompromising.

But perhaps her assertion that the FBI director had “no credibility” shook some things up. Not only that, in late-January, early February, we reported that Waters told Teen Vogue, that she had introduced a bill that would demand an investigation into Trump, his cabinet and their ties to Russia. In the press conference annoucing the bill, Waters said:

“In just under two weeks, Donald Trump has unnerved our allies, challenged our values, and brought so much instability and chaos to our country. This chaos is sure to please at least one person- Vladimir Putin.”

And today, it looks like someone heard her cry.

Because James B. Comey, the FBI director, announced that he would be investigating the Trump campaign and administration and their ties to Russia to see if there was any interference in the 2016 election.

In his opening statement at the hearing before the House Intelligence Committee, Comey said:

“I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. And that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts. As with any counterintelligence investigation, this will also include an assessment of whether any crimes were committed. Because it is an open, ongoing investigation and is classified, I cannot say more about what we are doing and whose conduct we are examining.”

And if that weren’t enough, Comey also spoke on Trump’s claims that President Obama had wiretapped his residence.

On March 4, Trump tweeted:

Comey stated that he had no information to support the claim.

As you might have guessed, Trump has already tweeted his response.

Well, alright.

This isn’t exactly an impeachment but this is certainly a step in the right direction. And when this moment is recorded in our history books, as it no doubt will be, regardless of the outcome of this investigation, I want Waters’ name to be included.

What do make of this investigation? Do you believe it will expose criminal conduct on behalf of the Trump campaign?

“She’s Been Everything”: Ice Cube On Celebrating 25 Years With Wife Kimberly

When people thing about Black love and Hollywood, they often think about couples like Denzel and Pauletta, Samuel Jackson and LaTanya Richardson, Barack and Michelle. But one couple often forgotten in such conversations about long-lasting love is Ice Cube and wife Kimberly Woodruff.

Ice Cube wife

They’ve been married since 1992 and will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary later this year. When speaking on what his wife and their relationship means to him to PEOPLE Now, Cube, born O’Shea Jackson, made it clear that Kimberly is “everything” to him.

“We’ve been together since ’89,” he said while promoting his Vh1 series, Hip Hop Squares. “So to us, we’re almost celebrating our 28th together. But as far as a married couple, ’92, November 28th. It feels great. I’m glad she’s stuck with me all of this time and not kicked me to the curb.”

Kimberly is the mother of the rapper and actor’s four children and can often be seen by his side, especially at movie premieres. When actress Alexandra Shipp met her to portray Kim in Straight Outta Compton, she described her as “the dopest woman ever.” She said that it was clear that the couple are “each other’s cheerleader, they are each other’s business partner, they are best friends.” Ice Cube would agree.

“She’s been everything,” he said. “This business looks like it’s exciting all of the time, but sometimes it can get lonely. Especially when you’ve got a project out there and you really don’t have a place to kind of fall back on somebody who knows you for real and knows everything about you. Just to have her there fighting these battles with me this whole career has been awesome.”

When asked to offer advice to other stars who seems to struggle to find their match while making their mark in the industry, Ice Cube shared a tip that everyone can benefit from.

“I think you’ve got to be friends first. A lot of people get together and they want to go and do their thing and jump right into a relationship, but I think that’s the wrong approach. You’ve got to have somebody you’re cool with, that you’re friends with and then start the relationship.”
